Warwick North helps those affected by Four Seasons fire

Posted

A fire at the Four Seasons apartment complex on Warwick Avenue early Saturday morning has forced several families from their homes.

But the city is responding with the intention of assisting those families, as some have lost everything in the wake of this unfortunate occurrence.

One organization that has reached out a helping hand is Warwick North Little League.

When Warwick North heard that one of its softball players and her family were involved in the fire, it was all-hands-on-deck with the hopes of giving back.

And that’s what it intends to do.

The league has put together a donation drive to gather items such as gift cards, cash, new and slightly used clothing, toiletries, toys and non-perishable food items to provide to the families who are enduring this hardship.

“I spoke with the player’s mother the day after the fire, and she was hoping that we could get the word out,” Warwick North Co-President Carlos Rodas said. “So we decided to put together a drive to help out, particularly because one of our players was involved.”

The actions of Warwick North speaks to the family atmosphere that Rodas and fellow Co-President Dave Palumbo are trying to instill in the league.

“We actually have t-shirts in our league that say ‘Warwick North family,’” Rodas said. “That’s what Dave and I are trying to generate. We’re not just a league, but a family. There’s always someone that needs help. We believe that it takes a village.”

Having a player involved isn’t the lone motivation for Warwick North, though.

It feels an obligation to give back to the city.

When its 11/12-year-old softball all-star team made it to the World Series in Portland, Ore., last month, the city rallied around the team, showing it overwhelming support while also donating money to help send the players and their families across the country.

Rodas was an assistant coach on that team, so he witnessed first-hand the generosity and support provided by the people of Warwick during his team’s run.

“Personally, I felt how much the city rallied around us and helped to send us to Oregon,” Rodas said. “Now it’s our turn to give back. We wanted to show the kids that it’s part of the deal. This just shows that we’re trying to teach the kids not only how to be good baseball and softball players, but good people as well.”

Warwick North was accepting donations down at “The Pit” on Monday night, and will also be accepting donations Wednesday and Thursday nights from 5-9 p.m.

Rodas noted that those who aren’t able to come during those times can drop off their donations at any of the Warwick Fire Department stations through next Friday.

“From what we hear, there are two families that lost everything,” Rodas said. “Anything that can be donated will help.”
