Warwick North juniors reach World Series, drop first two

Posted

The Warwick North all-stars have advanced to the Junior League Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington, but they are in familiar territory already.

The team, which is comprised of numerous members of last year’s Little League World Series squad, dropped its first two contests of pool play. The first result was 10-1 at the hands of West representative, Olivehurst-Linda Little League (California).

Warwick played its next opponent, La Grange (Texas) Little League, much closer, but the offense wasn’t there. The Southwest representative prevailed, 7-3.

The losses shouldn’t be discouraging, though. Returners such as Dyonna Rodas and Emily Carter remember last year’s World Series run, which started with a loss to Europe-Africa. After getting knocked down early, North made a run into the championship game against Rowan Little League (North Carolina).

The juniors went a perfect 8-0 in the East Regional, defeating New Jersey in the title series to clinch a berth in the World Series. To reach the final round, the Rhode Island representatives edged Pennsylvania, 4-3.

North will continue pool play today at 1:45 p.m. against Softbol Femenil Mexicali Little League, the Latin America representative.

Rhode Island shares Pool B with the West, Southwest, Latin America and Europe-Africa delegations.

The top four teams in each pool advance into the bracket stage of the tournament.

Warwick North’s roster boasts Rodas, Carter, Hailey Mackinnon, Kiley Lemieux, Sierra Ricci, Sophie DeTroia, Sydni Bigelli, Gianna Altieri, Taylor Suffoletto, Olivia Murray, Jordan Tiberi, Lexi Brown and Alyssa Richard.
