On 9/29/2016, at about 9:00am, the Warwick Police Department received a 911 call indicating that a gun had been fired at 123 Payton Avenue. Officers immediately responded and encountered William Leavitt, 41 year old white male from that address. Leavitt surrendered to the officers without any resistance.
An investigation ensued and it was determined that Leavitt had been seen wandering the neighborhood while in possession of a pistol. He returned to his own house, and witnesses reported hearing approximately four gunshots.
Leavitt then began to walk the neighborhood again.
He was confronted by an off duty Newport, RI police officer, who directed another bystander to call the Warwick Police. The Newport officer attempted to detain Leavitt until the arrival of the Warwick Police.
Initially Leavitt complied with the off duty officer’s instructions. Leavitt then fled from the off duty officer to his own house where he remained until he was brought into custody by the Warwick Police.
It was determined that the gunshots that the witnesses had heard were made by Leavitt firing his pistol into a cabinet in his own kitchen.
There were no injuries associated with this incident. Leavitt was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters pending his arraignment on gun related charges. The pistol was recovered from Leavitt’s house.
The matter is still under investigation.
