Warwick natives making an impact on the gridiron

A quartet of players that attended Warwick high schools took to the field of battle last Saturday as Castleton State made the trip down from Vermont to square up to Salve Regina, rekindling old rivalries in the process.

In the end, the homestanding Seahawks quashed the Spartan invasion 32-14, buoyed by more than 500 yards of total offense and a 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession.

The visit paid by the Castleton State gridders marked a return to the Ocean State for two former Hendricken players, senior offensive lineman Andrew Breting and junior kicking specialist Bobby Lineberger.

Breting has become a mainstay in the trenches for the Spartans as a four-year starter at center, having received the nod in the team’s last 21 games in a row dating back to his sophomore season.

Lineberger is a dual threat in the kicking game, having assumed Castleton State’s placekicking duties since arriving on campus in the fall of 2013, then becoming the Spartans’ punter the following campaign.

So far in 2015, Lineberger has successfully converted all five of his extra point attempts, while averaging 35.8 yards per punt.

On the other sideline, Salve responded with two Pilgrim alums, twin brothers Alex and Andrew Leddy, who are both in their senior seasons for the Seahawks.

Andrew has started both contests to date at defensive end, picking up three tackles and a sack, while also forcing a fumble in the final quarter of Saturday’s game in connection with the aforementioned sack.

On the other hand, Alex has found playing time harder to come by, with his only tackle thus far coming on punt coverage late in the Seahawks’ season opener versus Worcester State on Sept. 5.

Last weekend’s game marked the conclusion of the non-league portion of Salve Regina’s schedule, as the Seahawks will spread their wings and begin the conference portion of the slate this weekend with a visit to the Coast Guard Academy, while Castleton State will play its home opener versus Alfred State.
