Warwick pilot receives USAF-AUX award

Posted

Mission pilot Rob Cote is presented with the Region Commanders Outstanding Service Award by Lt. Col. Dan Leclair on Dec. 17. During the past year Cote coordinated the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Orientation flight program that flew more than 80 cadets from local high schools. The program is designed to introduce high school students to aviation and aerospace engineering careers. Two students from Warwick Veterans High School are slated to solo in early spring. Cote also commanded the first aircraft to fly immediately after Hurricane Sandy for the purpose of damage assessment of the Rhode Island coastline. The flight, which was also crewed by Warwick pilots James Burns and Fred Chanfrau delivered in excess of 700 high resolution photos that were delivered to FEMA and to the Pentagon. The flight was instrumental in the procurement of disaster funds for Rhode Island. The USAF-AUX Civil Air Patrol is a cadet driven volunteer organization comprised of 12-18 year old students and volunteer pilots. The program supports many other volunteer groups and specializes in search and rescue missions. CAP works extensively with Rhode Island Emergency Management and the National Guard and provides air support during the statewide disaster preparedness drills.
