Warwick trio getting it done for Corsairs

Three Pilgrim graduates are providing a triple threat for UMass-Dartmouth’s women’s soccer team this fall, and all have laser-etched their name into the Corsairs starting eleven.

Talia D’Ambruoso, Erica Hammond and Nicole Starkey have all earned starting roles in a squad packed with underclassmen, with all but five players being either a freshman or sophomore.

Of the three, Starkey is the only ex-Patriot to have scored a goal so far this season, the tally coming as the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 away triumph over Salve Regina on September 3.

Hammond and D’Ambruoso have started all five matches to date for UMass-Dartmouth, with D’Ambruoso taking the team’s corner kicks when she is on the pitch.

Starkey, on the other hand, missed the Corsairs’ away contests versus Hartwick and Oneonta State two weekends ago, but has otherwise been ever-present in the club’s starting eleven.

The start to the 2014 campaign for UMass-Dartmouth has seen the Corsairs rack up the miles, with six of their first seven matches taking place on the road.

Last Saturday’s encounter with Springfield marked the only home game during this stretch, with the Pride shutting out UMass-Dartmouth 3-0 and holding the Corsairs to seven shots on the afternoon.

This upcoming Saturday, the Corsairs open up the Little East portion of the schedule with another away contest, this time against Rhode Island College.

Bolton helping WPI

defense

Former Hendricken standout Connor Bolton has helped to marshal the Worcester Polytechnic Institute men’s soccer team to an unbeaten start to the season, aided in large part by an impregnable defense.

Bolton has started all five matches along the Engineer back line thus far, in which WPI has outscored its opponents by an 18-1 margin while maintaining a 374-minute shutout streak to start the season.

The WPI goal was breached for the first time in 2014 on Saturday when Nick Parker opened the scoring in the 15th minute for Massachusetts Maritime before the Engineers stormed from behind to win 2-1 in overtime.

Notes

Former Warwick Vets star Nick Salois notched 12 tackles in Bridgewater State’s 29-20 win over William Paterson on Saturday . . . Ex-Hawk Torrey Stricklin assisted on Sammy Wilson’s game-winning goal for Gordon in the Fighting Scots’ 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Wentworth on Saturday.
