Warwick wrestlers compete at New Englands

Warwick wrestlers were strong at the New England championship meet this past weekend at PCTA, but could not bring home the hardware. The best Warwick score of the day came from Bishop Hendricken, which finished 14th overall, the second best Rhode Island team in New England, falling short only of Exeter/West Greenwich, which took third.

Sophomore Jonathan Celico and senior Jason Davol led the Hawks on Saturday. After receiving a bye in the first round, Celico won by major decision over Matthew Dowler of St. Bernard. In the quarterfinal round, however, Celico could not overcome Michael Aquino of Catholic Memorial High School, who won the match by decision. From there, Celico made it to the fifth consolation round, when he was finally shut down by Zachary Murillo of Southington, who won 7-5.

Ben Zogby of Franklin High School knocked off Davol, who also received a bye in the first round, out of the championship bracket in the second round. After three straight wins in the consolation bracket, Davol’s streak was ended in the fifth round by Peter Robinson of Saint John’s Shrewsbury High School.

Other scorers for the Hawks included Dallas Sauer, Lewis Stewart, Anthony DiMauro, and Nicholas Celico.

Warwick Vets’ Davin Lourenco also fought hard on Saturday, winning the first round over Catholic Memorial’s Peter Gutierrez. Lourenco was beat in the next round by Dylan La Fountain from Mt. Anthony, and knocked out the round after that by Jeremy Jarvis of Essex.

Vets’ John Altieri, who won his fourth consecutive state crown last week, did not compete due to a shoulder injury.

Another Warwick performance came from Toll Gate’s Aaron Travers, who was defeated by Azalkhon Sarvalov from Manchester Central after receiving a bye in the first round. Travers’ day ended with a loss by decision in the second consolation round against Brett Leonard of New Milford.

The best Rhode Island finish of the day came from the Exeter/West Greenwich Knights, who finished third overall in the tournament. The top finishers for EWG were seniors Christian LaBrie with a first-place win, his brother Andrew LaBrie finishing third and Carl Neff with a second-place finish.
