Warwick's Leahy leads Wentworth between the pipes

Posted

Warwick native Nicole Leahy is heading down the homestretch of her collegiate career, but not before putting together some fine performances between the sticks for Wentworth.

After spending much of her senior season riding the pine for the Leopards, Leahy seized her opportunity with both hands on Oct. 16, backstopping Wentworth to a 4-0 win over Framingham State, snapping a six-match winless streak in the process.

Two days later, the Prout alumna kept another clean sheet against Western New England, making four saves in a 1-0 triumph that at the time put the Leopards above the .500 mark for the season.

However, despite her best efforts, Leahy was unable to extend Wentworth’s two-match mini-streak into a more substantial run, first giving up a pair of second-half goals in a 2-1 loss to Roger Williams on Oct. 22 and then surrendering a pair of markers in the final ten minutes of last Saturday’s 2-0 setback to Endicott.

One final regular season tilt awaits Leahy and the Leopards – a Tuesday afternoon home encounter versus Nichols in which a win for either team would guarantee their participation in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament, which is scheduled to commence this upcoming weekend.

Salois sets career high

Former Warwick Vets standout Nick Salois had an unforgettable day last Saturday in Bridgewater State’s 27-23 come-from-behind win over Westfield State. The ex-Hurricane notched a career-high 20 tackles and picked up his first sack of the season, the latter coming as a punt-forcing prelude to the Bears’ winning drive deep in the final term

Notes

Pilgrim alum Alex Leddy made his first reception of 2014 in Salve Regina’s 49-6 rout of Curry on Oct. 18, catching a 7-yard pass…. Former Hendricken pitcher Gus Culpo committed to pitch at the University of Pittsburgh last week, a Division I program in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Culpo currently pitches at Worcester Academy.
