Finding a cure for ALS is a cause with a special meaning for Gail Mance-Rios. Her uncle, Air Force Lt. Col. Richard Hornbeck, died of the disease. But there was more to her accepting the ice bucket challenge issued by Charlie Miller, her co-worker at the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority (RIHEAA), Friday afternoon. The acting executive director of the agency was also looking to build team spirit and having taken the challenge, issued a few of her own, although the icy water left her chilled to the bone. As for Miller, the agency’s retired executive director, Bill Hurry, challenged him. John Knight and Gary LeFrancois, who raised the most money in donations to ALS, were chosen to perform the dousing. Knight had the honors for Mance-Rios; LeFrancois had Miller. Between the two of them, they issued challenges to Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of education; Charles Kelley, executive director of the RI Student Loan Authority; and Jim Purcell, commissioner of post-secondary education. And both Miller and Mance-Rios wore Way to Go Rhode Island T-shirts. Run by RIHEAA, Way to Go is used by more than 90,000 students to manage academic assignments to research career fields. Ice bucket challenges have raised more than $54 million across the country in what has become the most successful fundraiser for ALS. (Warwick Beacon photos)
