We must become stewards of clean water

To the Editor:

Wake up, Warwick residents, to the fact that we are destroying our most important resource in our city. That resource is our abundance of water. Most of the water bodies in Warwick are impaired in some way. Take a minute and reflect how water touches all of us, and how different our lives would be without it. By our actions and non-actions we, all of us, have a negative impact on the quality of that water. We, as residents, impact that quality by the lawn care products we use, picking up after our pets, still using cesspools and poorly maintained septic systems. All these actions will end up in contaminating storm water runoff, which will end up in our water bodies.

Our elected officials also share responsibility. That responsibility comes in the form of the lack of resources, financial, physical and legislative, which are allocated to the environmental issues each year in this city. We must all become good stewards of our water resource. We must contact all our elected officials and demand their support for the implementation of sound environmental actions to keep our families and us healthy and safe. We believe that elected officials’ responses are driven by the amount of noise that an issue creates. Let’s make sure they receive a great deal of noise on this issue.

It’s not too late to stem the tide. What kind of legacy do we want to leave our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren? Will that legacy be written with the words, we did what we needed to do to ensure the environmental resource of clean Warwick water bodies, was restored for their generation and generations to come? Please let us all do our part.
