Well-rounded Hawks swim past Rebels

After Smithfield ended the Hendricken swim team’s run of 24 straight state titles two seasons ago, the Hawks bounced back with a convincing run to the title last winter.

And this season, the Hawks haven’t missed a beat either.

Hendricken won its season-opening meet against La Salle in mid-december, and moved to 2-0 on Tuesday with a dominating 76-17 victory over South Kingstown at the University of Rhode Island’s Tootell Aquatics Center.

The Hawks claimed seven of eight individual events and 10 of 11 overall en route to picking up the team win.

Freshman Mike Ryan and sophomore Lucas Stencel highlighted the individual winners, as each won two events apiece. Stencel won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, while Ryan claimed the 200 and 500 freestyles.

Other individual winners were: Marc Andrews in the 50 freestyle, Dillane Wehbe in the 100 freestyle and John Beretta in the 100 breaststroke.

South Kingstown’s Ean Kiely was the only winner at the meet for the Rebels, outpacing the competition in the 100 butterfly.

Hendricken won all three relays, too.

The team of Brendan Crowe, Beretta, Andrews and Connor Levine won the 200 free relay, the team of Gabe Ibarra, Stencel, Owen Schriber and Andrews won the 200 medley relay and the team of Ryan, Schriber, Wehbe and Crispin Ferris took first in the 400 free relay.

The Hawks will look to continue their hot start to the season next Tuesday, when they host Barrington at 4 p.m. at McDermott Pool. The dual meet will be a good measuring stick for both teams, as they finished first and second, respectively, at the state meet at Brown University last winter.

But with Hendricken’s depth, it should have no problem piling up points against any opponent in the state. The Hawks are well-positioned to make another run at the title this season.
