West Bay Chorale holiday concert features music of Warwick composer

The West Bay Chorale, led by Music Director Amanda Santo, will present a holiday concert, “Believe,” Dec. 15t at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Rd., Warwick.

The concert features some familiar holiday favorites, as well as some startlingly beautiful 20th and 21st century works by Byron Smith, Alan Silvestri and John Rutter, whose “Magnificat” is the featured work of the concert.

But the most unique piece is, “Now is the Beautiful Christmas Time,” written by Chorale member emeritus Jean Putnam. Jean, 91, who resides at Avalon Nursing Home, wrote the song about eight years ago before she lived in Warwick. It was performed that year at the Christmas Eve service at the Quaker Meeting House in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and then filed away. Her son, Mark, a member of the Chorale, discovered it this summer in a file folder and wrote alto, tenor and bass parts for the soprano melody.

The West Bay Chorale is in its 31st year. Although it is a non-religious chorale whose members enjoy the experience of making music together, it has enjoyed the support of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church since its inception in 1981. The concert is open to all.
