Last season, Warwick West Side’s 8-year-old summer team captured the Coventry Invitational. This summer, as 9-year-olds, the team competed in two Massachusetts tournaments and was successful in both.

In the Rehoboth Summer Slam, featuring 20 teams from around New England, Warwick defeated several teams from Massachusetts and New York before falling to eventual champion Clifton Park, N.Y., in the semifinals.

One week later, the Warwick team was back on the road competing in the Attleboro Summer Slam. As Rhode Island’s sole representative, Warwick went undefeated in the preliminary round, scoring 42 runs while giving up just three in its first three games. As the No. 1 seed, Warwick defeated Mansfield, Mass., 7-6 in the semifinals and Wellesley, Mass., 3-2 in the finals to be crowned the 2013 Attleboro Summer Slam champion.
