A Providence woman has been charged with a misdemeanor after allegedly leaving her dog in a hot car at a Garfield Avenue shopping plaza.

Laura Mosquea Figuereo, 26, of 13 Barden St., faces one count of prohibited animal confinement in a motor vehicle.

Police responded to the plaza at approximately 6:42 p.m. Monday following reports of a dog left inside an unattended, locked vehicle for roughly 40 minutes.

“Callers reported that the car engine was off and the front driver and passenger windows were down only a half inch,” reads a press release. “They reported seeing a small dog described as a white Maltese experiencing labored breathing.”

Officers are said to have “made an extensive effort” to locate the car’s owner, going to each business in the plaza and utilizing the stores’ intercom systems. There was no response, and eventually officers broke the rear window of the car, removed the dog and gave it water.

Figuereo arrived at the car roughly 15 minutes later, and reportedly told officers she had been shopping in a store but never heard an announcement.

The dog was transported to the Cranston Animal Shelter, and police said it “will be held there until its owner satisfies any costs for maintenance, care, medical treatment, or confinement for the animal.”
