Beginner beekeeping classes start in February through the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association. Classes will be held at the following times and locations:

Rhode Island College – Friday mornings

Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7 (10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

Instructor: Betty Mencucci

Rhode Island College – Saturday mornings

Feb. 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8 (10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

URI East Farm – Thursday evenings

Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13 (6 p.m. – 8 p.m.)

URI East Farm – Saturday mornings

Feb. 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 (9 a.m. – 11 a.m.)

The course will cover everything the beginning beekeeper needs to know. Subjects will include getting started, the honeybee life cycle, choosing an apiary site, buying bees and equipment, assembly of the hive, installing package bees, catching swarms, nectar sources, bee diseases and pests, hive inspections and wintering. Beekeeping equipment will be displayed and demonstrated each week.

The cost for the five- or six-week course is $65 per person. This includes all course materials, a textbook and membership dues in the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association (expiring March 31, 2015). Additional family members at the same address may attend for $10 each. (In this case, the entire family will be a member of the organization but will receive only one textbook and one set of handouts).
