Wrapping has become a 30-year family affair

“Just say yes” is the philosophy for BORI Graphix and it has helped the company grow in the past 30 years from selling large rooftop balloons and singing telegrams out of their one-car garage in Providence to specializing in customized designs, signs, vehicle wraps, banners and much more.

Gary and Denise Paplauskas started Balloons Over Rhode Island (BORI) in 1985 out of their garage and after saying yes to any job that came their way and “figuring it out” over the last 30 years, they now own a 5,000-square-foot facility in Warwick with 10 full-time employees, three of them their own children, Meghan, Chris and Justin Paplauskas.

The three hadn’t always planned on working in the family business and even went to college with different majors but each returned in time.

Gary admitted working with family comes with its challenges; the family can often be found pranking each other and fellow employees throughout the workweek.

Meghan once came back to the office to find her desk completely cordoned off into its own “fort” with cardboard.

Overall though, it’s a great group to work with day in and day out.

Meghan said none of the children were pressured into working for the family business but have come to love working with the family.

“Plus, they are getting older too. So they need someone to pass this on to,” she said.

“A lot of what brought me back was how hard I saw my parents worked growing up. They instilled each of us with a great work ethic,” Chris said. “Even when I was working elsewhere, my heart was here.”

They explained that both Denise and Gary could be found working after hours and on weekends to ensure customers are getting the best product possible.

“They are super dedicated people,” Justin said. “Everything we have today is because of them.”

He explained that every customer gets the “family experience” and whatever is needed; BORI Graphix tries to provide that.

“Just say yes,” he said.

Chris said any job, small or large, for a family reunion or huge corporation, BORI Graphix will take it on.

Meghan believes customers appreciate feeling like family and said, “I think people rather spend their money at a local small business and be treated like family than go to a large corporation and be just another number.”

In the next 30 years, Gary said he would like to see retirement, and hopefully pass the business onto his children.

Justin, Chris and Meghan would like to see their current building expand, or open a second location over the next 30 years while adding more than 10 new full-time employees.

They aren’t worried of their business becoming outdated, because just as their parents evolved with the needs of their customers, there is always “something new coming up” and although BORI Graphix is run with old school work ethics, it has always been open to new techniques, products and innovation.

Meghan said, “The only limitation is your imagination.”

Currently, BORI Graphix has a large customer base and are “always busy” but happy to see new customers.

“Just the journey of where this all started, it’s incredible,” Meghan said.

“Seeing where we are now, it’s amazing,” Gary said. “It is all because some people and companies really believed in us.”
