The Bishop Hendricken wrestling team couldn’t push its state title streak to five over the weekend, as Cumberland (205 points) powered its way past the field for its first championship since 2012 at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

The Clippers took a sizeable lead into the championship round, and they were able to hold off second-place Ponaganset (187.5) behind two first-place finishes and a pair of runner-up efforts.

Hendricken had two individual state champions, as Devin Rivet defended his title at 138 pounds, while senior Nick Martino pinned North Kingstown’s Richard Brown at 285 to secure his individual gold.

Pilgrim also fared well at the state meet, placing a total of eight wrestlers, with its top finish coming via a second-place showing from senior Garrison Potter at 160.

Overall, the Hawks would take third with 145.5 points and the Pats finished fifth with 124.5.

Hendricken had four wrestlers secure spots in the title round, but Dylan DiSano, the top seed at 145, got edged, 3-1, in overtime after a hard-fought battle with Ponaganset’s Sam Lynch. Nate Williams also earned a silver at 113 after he couldn’t get by Chariho’s Kyle Merritt.

The only other Hawks that placed were Jacob Iacobucci (106) and Cam Nappi (120), as both wrestlers took fourth, respectively.

Pilgrim didn’t produce any state champions, but it was able to get on the podium more frequently than Hendricken.

Outside of Potter’s second-place finish, Pilgrim had Eric Watts (third at 113), Jacob Zuller (third at 132), Andrew Soares (fourth at 126), Tyler Parton (fourth at 170), Shawn Holland (sixth at 106), Steve Kavanagh (sixth at 182) and Marcus Eckert (sixth at 220) all earn medals.

Toll Gate’s lone wrestler to place was Kyle Brown, who posted a fourth-place finish at 152.

Hendricken and Pilgrim will both have wrestlers compete at the New England High School Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Friday and Saturday, as the top three wrestlers in each weight class at states move on to New Englands.

Rivet, Martino, Williams and DiSano will represent Hendricken this weekend, while Potter, Zuller and Watts will represent Pilgrim against the best competition from around the region.

The tournament format is similar to the Rhode Island state tournament. Matches will begin on Friday evening, before resuming Saturday morning and running all day. The championship bouts will then be held on Saturday night.
