A pretty big number

To the Editor:
$640 million. That’s a pretty big number. Especially when you realize that’s how much the state of Rhode Island takes on in tobacco-related health care costs each year.
Eighteen hundred is a pretty big number, too. And a sad one, as it represents the number of adults who die in Rhode Island each year from their own smoking. On top of that, 16,000 kids now under 18 and alive in Rhode Island will ultimately die prematurely from smoking.
So what can we do about it? For starters, we can help people quit smoking and help ensure that our youth never pick up the deadly addiction in the first place. We can do this by prioritizing state funding for tobacco prevention, cessation and education programs.
As a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) I look forward to working with Governor Raimondo and the General Assembly next year to increase tobacco control prevention and cessation as part of the state’s budget. We have a great opportunity ahead of us to work together to ensure sufficient funds are in place to combat tobacco use by our youth, and to help smokers quit for good.
$640 million is a big number, but it’s one that we can bring down if we invest in prevention and cessation today. We’ve made great progress in the fight against tobacco, but now is not the time to stop – there are simply too many lives on the line.

    Dear Karen,

I read an article yesterday that states Rhode Island is leading the nation in percentage of "sin taxes" at over 10% of the entire tax revenue. The average state receives between 2 and 3%. Between the Lottery and the tax on tobacco and alcohol, we should be at the lowest end for other taxes such as income tax and sales tax but, as you know, we are at the highest in those categories as well.

I ran for Mayor of Warwick with a "cut taxes - cut spending" campaign slogan. I know that when we do, population will grow in Warwick and total tax revenue will grow as well.

The same applies for Rhode Island, but that is a challenge for someone else, not me.

    Enjoy Fourth of July Karen.

    Hello Karen:

Please disregard the prior comment by a man who calls himself "mayor" despite losing an election 65-35% and who speaks about taxes despite being a proven tax delinquent.

Were he a more careful reader, he would understand that you are advocating for heathier choices and better use of public funds to reduce harmful behaviors.

Unfortunately, he has again proven his complete inability to restrain himself from making embarrassing statements on this website, and will assuredly continue that trend in his next comment.

    Dear Karen,

I apologize for the comments of CrickeeRaven. She says I call myself "mayor". That's a lie. I call myself "The Taxpayers Mayor" because I feel an absolute connection with the taxpayers of Warwick and I consider myself a servant to them.

She calls herself CrickeeRaven. Perhaps she has some connection with a cricket... or a raven. No one knows because, unlike me, he/she refuses to identify him/herself. One has to wonder why.

She calls me a tax delinquent. That is a lie. Anyone who calls the tax collector will affirm that.

CrickeeRaven says "Were he a more careful reader, he would understand that you are advocating for healthier choices and better use of public funds." Please re-read my comment. Where did I say otherwise?? That lie is completely made up!

For the record I agree with everything you stated, even if CrickeeRaven tries to twist my intention and misinform the reader.

Keep up the good work Karen. You're making the world a better place, and you're right. "There are simply too many lives on the line".

"Corrente’s house sold in an August 2013 tax sale for $10,145.98 in back taxes."

That direct quote is from this article: http://warwickonline.com/stories/mayors-race-hotter-than-usual,119296?

Alert readers will also notice that he did not provide a link to a paid tax bill, for example, or any other proof besides "call the tax collector." This is just the latest attempt to deflect from the proven falsehoods that he has regularly stated on this website and throughout his failing campaign.

A home sold for failure to pay back taxes makes the former owner a tax delinquent. That is the verifiable fact that the fake "mayor" so strenuously and embarrassingly calls a "lie."

He will certainly exceed that embarrassment with his next comment.

    Dear CrickeeRaven,

    Be careful.

    Your facts are wrong...again.

For the record, my lender broke the law. Got that? They broke the law. I sued them in Federal Court AND WON! My lender was Federal-court-ordered to pay "all taxes and municipal fees" during "the good-faith negotiations". They did pay them, but they paid them late, waiting until after the tax sale to do so. As you know, CrickeeRaven, they had one year to pay all taxes that were due in addition to a small penalty. (I believe it is 12%). They then negotiated a written agreement with me that they also violated. Stay tuned for the end results on that one. The taxes you referred to in the 2013 tax sale were absolutely in my name but were absolutely the responsibility of my lender to pay. Just check with Chris Celeste the tax collector. He's right down the hall from you. He will also confirm that I have always paid my taxes in full and have no back taxes at this time although I did owe exactly one penny in March of this year. Celeste was kind enough to not charge a late fee for my "one penny" of back taxes that was keeping me from registering my car. You say that "He (meaning Corrente) will certainly exceed that embarrassment with his next comment." My counter to that is "If my responses to your comments give you "embarrassment", maybe you shouldn't make these false accusations in the first place. I don't intend to "embarrass" you but I won't let you slander my name.

I am not a tax delinquent. Nor am I a fake. I use my self-described title, and my real name.

You use a self-described title that is a cross between a cricket and a raven and a name that can't possibly be your own. That, CrickeeRaven, IS BEING A "FAKE"...and a hypocrite.

    Happy Summer everyone.

Anytime the fake "mayor" cares to produce the slightest verifiable proof of his claims... will be the first time.

But the next time he embarrasses himself with his bullying behavior, dark conspiracy theories, and pathetic rants on this website will only be the latest example of his complete unfitness for any office. Give him time, and he will prove it yet again.

Readers interested in the actual tax record of the fake "mayor," as provided by someone who actually does frequent City Hall, should read the following posted by regular commenter Thecaptain at this link: http://warwickonline.com/stories/no-tax-increase-budget-holds-mayor-wont-use-veto,125025?#comments

    Here is an excerpt:

"His 2009 car tax bill was late every quarter and he paid $30.30 in late fees

His 2010 car tax bill was late and wasn't paid until 1/25/2012 and he paid $157.22 in late fees

His 2011 car tax bill was late and wasn't paid until 1/25/2012 and he paid $34.64 in late fees

His 2012 car tax bill was late and wasn't paid until 3/3/2013 and he paid $28.72 in late fees

Then his car mysteriously went off the tax roles for 3 years while he lived at 177 Grand View Dr. during the time that he didn't pay his mortgage, didn't pay his property taxes, and didn't pay his utility bills, yet lived in Warwick, had his garbage collected, had his street plowed, had fire service, police service, etc...

Then his 2016 car tax bill was late and wasn't paid until 3/24/17 and he paid a total of $176.87."

It is a certainty that the fake "mayor" will exceed the embarrassment he has already made of himself in his next comment.

Thank you CrikkeeRaven for saving me the time to once again eviscerate the lying delinquent fraudulent non tax paying, non utility paying, non car tax paying squatter from 177 Grand view Ave who leaves a trail of unpaid bills and litigation where ever he goes. I apologize for placing the burden on you this week to rebut his continued habitual lies but I have been busy working double shifts and paying enormous taxes, state , federal, self employment, property, vehicle, tangible, etc... while the Non -Taxpayer habitual liar squatter DUMBNESS Mayor continues to make attempts to salvage the graveyard of fiscal skeletons in his closet. It was fun for a bit, now it is just exhausting to keep up with his delusions.

However, I do think that we should host a drinks and appetizer hour at a local watering hole to discuss his continued misrepresentations and outright lies. I think that would be enjoyable.

Any suggestions on the venue?? I suggest the waterfront.

    Rick,

For the record, YOU LOST. You were force-ably removed from the property at 177 Grand View after 2 + years of squatting and you never paid the utility bills. Your lender was never held responsible as you quote. The company who bought your property at tax sale and foreclosure paid all fees. That would be Red-stick Acquisitions. In turn, when they sold the property, the new owner assumed all of your utility bills for water, in excess of $500. I can only imagine that was $500 worth of water that used used to wash your lying tongue with soap as my mother always told me I would have to do if I lied. THATS A BOAT LOAD OF H20 BABY !!

    Hello again Thecaptain:

While I certainly appreciate your gracious invitation, I am, like you, responsible for a number of adult priorities that prevent me from accepting at this time. Perhaps our paths will cross this time next year during campaign season.

Thank you for yet another extensive, factual review of the fake "mayor" and the trail of delinquencies that he has left in his wake. I am pleased to know that you and thousands of Warwick taxpayers understand the true nature of the fake "mayor."

I will concede that it has become rather exhausting to keep following the delinquent, lying, failed fake "mayor" on this site and correcting the fallacies he so readily repeats here. My one consolation is that truth-telling commenters like us are the only ones replying to him, showing that he will not succeed in fooling readers of this site.
