Thomas Harkins, Bishop Hendricken High School class of 1976, has been selected as the 2017 Board Member of the Year by the Association of Catholic Admissions and Advancement Professionals (ACAAP).
The Board Member of the Year Award honors a board member or trustee who has exhibited exceptional commitment and leadership in developing support for his or her Catholic institution. The ACAAP Recognition Awards are designed to publicly acknowledge individuals and organizations for their extraordinary commitment to Catholic school, parish and institutional philanthropy. Recipients of these awards have set the standard for service and dedication.
Although he lives and works full time in New Hampshire, Harkins regularly commutes to Rhode Island to meet with Hendricken administrators, serve as a board member as well as an assistant track and field coach, and attend school events.
A financial advisor by trade, Harkins has guided Hendricken administrators and Diocese of Providence officials in budgeting, fundraising and investments. His most recent work has helped Hendricken’s administration gain clarity about the school’s endowment.
Harkins has chaired several board sub-committees and is currently leading the governance arm of the school’s Strategic Plan. He hosts the school’s annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and helps to select each class of inductees along with the event’s alumni scholarship winners. He spends his spare time sharing ideas with leaders at other Catholic schools, consistently searching for the best practices to help Hendricken continue to thrive.
Harkins is the first board member from a Rhode Island school to win the award, which has been presented since 2002.
A luncheon and awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 16 at 12:30 p.m. at the College of the Holy Cross, Hogan Campus Center, Worcester, Mass. For further information on the awards ceremony and to purchase tickets contact Awards Committee Chair Rick Blain, CFRE, at 978-332-5100, or rick@rrblain.com.
