The Aloha Joe Marathon, which was originally scheduled for Monday, May 18, has been pushed off to Monday, May 25.
The marathon, created by Oakland Beach resident Joe Sullivan, will raise funds to deliver meals to local first responders at the Warwick Police and Fire departments as well as Kent Hospital.
Sullivan was training for the Boston Marathon prior to its postponement due to the COVID-19 crisis, and will be hosting this event right in his neighborhood at Oakland Beach and will be running the marathon himself.
Sullivan tweaked his calf during training last week in preparation for the event, which forced him to move it back one week to give himself time to heal.
Although Sullivan was upset to have to push the event off a week, it does provide him some extra time to raise more money, as he just reached $1,400 in total.
“Absolutely [it’s beneficial], seems like every day we have more people posting, some people have said that they will post on the actual race day. We are still spreading the news, we’re trying to stay positive,” Sullivan said.” If people can donate, even just a few bucks here and there, every little bit counts. We’re now looking forward to the next stage, which is actually delivering meals. It’s going to be a fun event and we’re looking forward to it. It’ll be a little sore but I’ll push through it, I’ll be alright.”
The meals and beverages will be made and donated by Dave’s Bar & Grill as well as Newport Stop & Shop. To donate, visit the Friends of Aloha Joe Facebook page or check out the event on GoFundMe. Sullivan will be accepting donations prior to the race as well as the actual day of.
