Andrew J. Gauthier Scholarship Games set for Feb. 3

Posted

The Warwick hockey community will celebrate the life of Andrew J. Gauthier for a ninth consecutive year on Feb. 3 at Thayer Arena.

Gauthier, who laced up his skates for Toll Gate and the Warwick Junior Hockey Association, passed away after a long battle with leukemia in 2007.

Every year since then, a hockey festival has been constructed by his family and friends and held at Thayer in Gauthier’s honor.

This year, due to scheduling and weather issues in recent years, the Gauthier family will hold a smaller version of what the festival has been in the past.

On Friday, Feb. 3, the Toll Gate boys’ team and the Warwick Co-op girls’ team will each play a regularly-scheduled league game, and the doubleheader will be tabbed as the Andrew J. Gauthier Scholarship Games.

Currently, Warwick Co-op is scheduled to play Smithfield/Coventry Co-op at 6 p.m. and the boys’ squad will match up against Lincoln/East Providence Co-op at 7:30 p.m., with a ceremony to honor Gauthier sandwiched between the doubleheader.

Merchandise such as hats and t-shirts with Gauthier’s No. 8 on them will be sold at the rink on the night of the games to benefit the Andrew J. Gauthier Scholarship Fund.

Like in years past, the Andrew J. Gauthier Scholarships will be presented to select Warwick student-athletes in the months after the doubleheader next Friday.
