Barnes students complete Humanitarians for Hasbro drive

As part of their school's Feinstein Good Deeds program, the fifth-grade students at Sarah Dyer Barnes Elementary School recently completed a Humanitarians for Hasbro drive that will benefit those patients at Hasbro Children's Hospital who utilize the activity rooms at the hospital.

"Each month one grade level does a good deed as part of the Feinstein Good Deeds program," said fifth-grade teacher Julie Romano. "This was what the fifth-graders chose to do for their month."

Romano said that the students were inspired by a presentation that their principal Jill Souza recently did for them about a humanitarian award presented by Harvard University to Robyn Fenty, better known as Rihanna. The award recognized her work in Barbados, where she has set up a cancer diagnosis and treatment center in honor of her grandmother, as well as her past humanitarian work, which began when she was just 18 years old.

"Ms. Souza talked to the students all about what a humanitarian is and what they could do to be humanitarians, and she also talked about the fact that humanitarians do things for others without expecting anything in return," said Romano. "They were surprised to learn that Robyn Fenty was actually Rihanna and that she had done all of this work for cancer patients and had started so young, and they didn't even know this about her."

The Humanitarians for Hasbro drive asked students school-wide to bring in new items such as books, coloring books, crayons, markers and craft kits for making small projects such as frames, jewelry and wooden crafts. Fifth-grade teachers Jen Morel, Michelle Smith, Nicole Barboza and Julie Romano oversaw the effort. The drive ran for two weeks, from March 13 to March 24, and at the conclusion the students were thrilled to see that the school's foyer was filled with dozens of new items that will now be delivered to Hasbro for their patients to enjoy.
