Best Hoops basketball set for another summer of fun

Best Hoops Premier Basketball Camp at Bishop Hendricken High School is set for its 28th year this July, and hopes to see many local athletes come on down to learn the basics of the game, as well as work hard and have fun.

“Our camp is something we take great pride in, we’ve had many outstanding boys and girls come through the camp. The focus is always on respect, discipline and doing things the right way. We love our camp and we’re getting ready for the summer. Before we know it, it’s going to be here,” said camp director and longtime Hendricken boys basketball coach Jamal Gomes.

The camp will have various exercises each day, including basic fundamental training, 3-on-3 scrimmages, 5-on-5 scrimmages, ball handling competitions, end of the week awards and many more.

“We do many activities throughout the week that help promote enjoyment of the game, fundamental skill level and respect for one another. We’re hoping that this summer will be the same, we’re hoping that it grows even more,” said Gomes.

Another key component of the camp will be teaching athletes the importance of respecting the game and having a strong philosophical approach to the sport. Gomes and his staff find that teaching kids the sport both on and off the court is critical, as the counselors come from all levels of basketball.

“As far as camps go in Rhode Island we do very well with our numbers, we’ll do well over 100 campers a week. We hire a very competent staff of middle school, high school and college coaches and teachers. Our campers are getting coached by professional educators and that’s what separates us from many of the other camps out there,” said Gomes.

Gomes and his staff are excited to meet local athletes, show them the ropes, and spread their love of the game to each camper.

“(We’re looking forward) to seeing the campers’ commitment and enjoyment of the game. To want to improve and to learn, that’s what it’s all about,” said Gomes. “It’s about learning a new skill and building on their current skill and developing that love of the game. That’s our goal, it’s to teach these boys and girls the right way to play the game which is with respect, fundamentals and teamwork.”

Best Hoops also hopes to help build a strong basketball community in Warwick, and to have it be a staple in the sport for summers to come.

“A large portion of our camp is Warwick student-athletes so I think it’s a great service for the city of Warwick,” said Gomes. “It gives these boys and girls the opportunity to compete and learn in a structured way. It’s a highly structured camp. It’s a great camp that’s been around for a lot of years and we’re hoping to keep it around for many more.”

Best Hoops is a 3-week camp for ages 7-18. This year the camp will be held on the weeks of July 16-20, July 23-27, and July 30-Aug. 3 at Bishop Hendricken High School.

Campers may attend the camp for any of the three weeks, or all three if they choose. A 1-week, single child costs 240 dollars with a 3-week cost being 645 dollars. There are lesser fees for second and third child plans.

Checks are to be mailed to Best Hoops Premier Basketball Camp at 38 Gorham St., Rehoboth, MA. For more information, check out www.besthoopspremierbasketball.com.
