Hawks pick up win over Clippers

The Bishop Hendricken lacrosse team topped Cumberland 13-12 last week completing the comeback victory over the Blue Clippers.

Despite trailing 9-2 early on, the Hawks would go on a 5-0 run late in the first half to cut the deficit to 9-7 at the break, and would maintain control in the second half to gut out the win.

Cam Toussaint led the Hawks with six goals and an assist while Collin McSparren had four goals. Brendan Kelleher added three goals and an assist, while Justin DeBalsi and Sam Hicks added assists in the win.

“We’ve got a mix of (veterans and young kids), we graduated a few, had another transfer, so overall we have four 30-point scorers (from last year) that are no longer part of the team. That definitely hurts a little bit, but we have some experience. Whether it be in JV last year or the varsity reps that they did get,” said Hendricken coach David Haddeland of the team’s new roster.

Although the Hawks have jumped out to a 2-6 record so far this spring, Haddeland has been encouraged by the club’s improvement and believes that the sky is the limit for the new-look Hawks, who will take Barrington this evening.

“We preach the fundamentals and doing all things right. Team culture, character, respect, belief, passion, that’s what we preach to these guys every day. We just need to do the little things right and the big things will take of themselves. We’re getting better, every day we work,” said Haddeland. “We have room to grow. We have also had some injuries and illnesses, we’ve been down an attackman, a middie. At the end of the day if we continue to work and do the little things right then we will be fine and hopefully make the playoffs.”
