Hawks crush Warriors to continue strong start
The Bishop Hendricken Hawks shut out the Central Falls Warriors, 6-0, on Tuesday evening at Hendricken to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Senior forward Chukwudi Onyejose led the way, scoring a hat trick, and his identical twin brother, Chukwuma Onyejose, scored a goal and had the assists on two of his brother’s goals.
The Hawks’ defense was stingy, holding Central Falls to just four shots all night while allowing the Hendricken offense to take command of the game.
Hendricken head coach Michael Rooney was thrilled with the outcome.
“Six to nothing is a good win,” Rooney said. “We played some really good soccer. There were some really nice goals. And we got the shutout and that’s the important thing, as well. It’s another good step in the right direction.”
Hendricken got its first goal just 35 seconds into the contest when Chukwuma Onyejose passed ahead to Chukwudi, who charged from the right side before booting it past Juan Hernandez, the Central Falls goalkeeper, giving the Hawks the early 1-0 lead.
Forty-three seconds later, Chukwudi had another opportunity, but this time he misfired. But, with 26:26 remaining in the first frame, Hendricken netted its second goal off a throw-in, as Ewan Noble heaved in an inbound pass to senior defenseman Ian Crowe, who used a header to put it past Hernandez, giving the Hawks a 2-0 edge.
With 17:47 left in the first half, Chukwudi and Chukwuma Onyejose hooked up again and extended the Hawks’ edge to 3-0.
Hendricken sophomore defenseman A.J. Guindon made a nice sliding stop to block a shot by Central Falls’ Adilson Da Silva with 3:24 left in the half to keep Central Falls scoreless.
With 37:29 left to play in the game, Chukwuma blasted a rocket from 22 yards out and found the back of the net, increasing Hendricken’s advantage to 4-0.
Chukwudi got his third goal of the game with 31:07 remaining. The score came on an assist from Noble and extended the Hawks edge to 5-0. It was Noble’s second assist on the night.
With 2:59 remaining in the contest, Andreus Bargblor assisted to sophomore midfielder Michael Hanlon to put the Hawks up 6-0.
Hendricken won its season opener against Chariho, 7-3. Central Falls drops to 1-1 with the loss. The Hawks play next today against Central at 6 p.m. at Conley Stadium in Providence.
