Bill should be scrapped

Posted

To the Editor:

Representatives McNamara, Shanley, and Bennett recently sent out a press release accusing (unnamed) individuals of spreading “false information” concerning the proposed legislation on abortion. They state that the proposal will “not allow for abortion on demand,” “will not radically change State law” and will “codify Roe v. Wade.”

Let’s look!

It changes the current State definition of viability, which is objective to the sole subjective discretion of the abortionist. I would say that is a radical change. Perhaps they should read the cases of Drs. Gosnell (Pa.), Osathanondh (Mass.), Pendergaft (Fla.), Rand (Calif.) or even the case against the Metropolitan medical Associates in New Jersey, just to mention a few, before giving that much power to the abortionist.

The bill also states that the “decision” is to be “made prior to fetal viability” not the abortion. This allows for the abortion to be performed up until birth i.e. as long as the “decision” was made prior to viability. Again, a radical change.

Next it gives carte blanche to any “medically recognized method.” Partial-birth abortion is a medically recognized method. Even though federal law bans it, State law provides a means of enforcement not available under federal law. This procedure is performed in later stages when an unborn child is viable. In other words the unborn child counts for nothing! Another radical change.

In addition, the wording of this law goes beyond Roe v. Wade and virtually surrenders the State’s obligation to govern in this area.  Such a dangerous bill should be scrapped!
