Booth helps Vikings power past Pats

The Pilgrim girls’ basketball team couldn’t find an answer for Rogers’ Izzy Booth on Tuesday night, as the sophomore forward scored in a bevy of ways before exiting the game with 29 points less than midway through the second half.

Sparked by Booth, the Vikings finished the first half and started the second half strong to put the game away early in a 71-47 final, handing the Pats their fourth consecutive loss in Division II.

It wasn’t just Booth that was getting it done for the Vikings, though.

She was efficient, but so were her teammates. The rest of Rogers’ starting four contributed in a variety of ways, and so did the bench, with Kiara Noka and Maeve Byrne coming off the bench to net 10 and nine points, respectively.

“We usually try to make the fourth and fifth players on the other team beat us, but everyone they brought in was knocking down shots tonight,” Pilgrim head coach Scott Bayha said. “It felt like they shot about 70 percent tonight.”

The Pats hung tough early after a strong start for Rogers.

A Mackenzie Hough 3 ball trimmed the deficit to 11-8 with 8:45 left in the first half, and Kat Raposo drove and dished to Jeriann Evans for an easy two a few minutes later to keep it close at 22-16.

Then, Booth started to heat up in the waning minutes of the half to help Rogers pull away.

She drove for a score in the final minute, and then grabbed an offensive rebound and converted an and-1 as the buzzer sounded to give Rogers a 42-21 lead at the break.

Booth concluded the opening 16 minutes with 20 points, displaying her versatility both inside and outside.

“She was very tough,” Bayha said of guarding Booth. “She was getting to the basket early, so we tried to force her outside and she was knocking down 3s.”

The Vikings came out of the locker room on fire, starting the second half on a 14-2 run while pushing the insurmountable advantage out to 56-23.

From there, though, Pilgrim ended the game strong.

Raposo dished out a couple of assists on consecutive trips down the floor to Caitlyn Fallon and Grace Maguire near the 10-minute mark.

Hough then swished a pair of 3s midway through the half, before collecting a defensive rebound and passing ahead to Fallon for a lay-in, bringing the deficit to 63-42.

That was as close as Pilgrim would get, however, as Rogers went on to improve its record to 9-1 in league play.

Fallon produced another double-double for Pilgrim in the loss, compiling 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way for the Pats.

Hough finished with nine points, while Evans and Mary Mullane each added eight.

Pilgrim will look to get back in the win column tonight when it travels to Exeter/West Greenwich for a 7 p.m. start.
