Boy Scouts put safety first

To the Editor:

Troop 1 Warwick showed how Boy Scouts put into practice their oath, which among other things encourages them to be helpful and loyal.

On the morning of Saturday, February 18, a group from Troop 1 Warwick, who are based out of Heritage Christian Fellowship in Warwick Neck, saw a need and went out into the community. From Mill Cove Road to Cady Avenue along Tidewater Drive, scouts shoveled snow and chipped away at ice from sidewalks. Scoutmaster Edwin A. Turner utilized his snow blower to help clear out walking paths.

"The loss of Matt Ogara was our inspiration to go out," according to Turner on social media.

Free of school, Saturday mornings are usually reserved for sleep, electronics or cartoons. Instead these scouts mobilized into action like volunteer firemen to assist those unable to shovel themselves out who might otherwise face a fine unless they could claim a hardship.

The scouts met a couple who recently returned from vacation and found a mound of ice piled up on the corner of their home that had been left behind by the plows. Ordinarily, the couple would have been able to keep up, but being days removed from the storm after coming back home they found the entrenched mound of ice over snow impossible to remove.

Thank you to scouts Ian Turner, Russell D. Gundlach, Mark Jandreau and Cub Scout Jack Turner of Troop 1 Warwick for volunteering and providing a valuable service. Safety must be made a priority. No one should have to be forced to walk in the street and be put in harm's way.

Russell E. Gundlach Jr.
