Brayton Cemetery spring cleanup set for Saturday

Posted

The City’s Commission on Historical Cemeteries will hold its annual cleanup of Brayton Cemetery on Saturday, April 13 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The cemetery is located on Post Road in historic Apponaug Village, across the street from the Trudeau Center (3445 Post Road). A heavy downpour rain date is scheduled for Sunday, April 14 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

“Every year, the dedicated members of the cemeteries commission and other residents give of their time for this project,” the Mayor Joseph Solomon said. “Their hard work helps to ensure that Brayton Cemetery remains well-kept and a respectful resting place for thousands of people who have helped to shape our community and played a role in Warwick’s history in any number of ways. I invite our residents to join us in this very worthwhile project on Saturday.”

The cemetery contains over 3,800 burials with nearly 3,000 inscriptions dating from 1754 to the present day, with 105 Civil War veterans in this cemetery identified on their gravestones.

Sign-up is not required, but volunteers are asked to bring rakes and gloves. Students and others who are looking to complete community service hours are also welcome to take part in the cleanup.
