The U.S. Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit Providence, which is based in Warwick, conducted its annual bridge building competition Friday as teams from Mt. Pleasant High School worked with Coast Guard engineers to construct bridges from Popsicles sticks to withstand the greatest weight. The event, with drones as prizes to the winning team, was sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) local Narragansett Bay Post. The goal of the competition is to promote the study and application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fundamentals through the Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education Program explained Lt. Commander Colleen Symanski. Above, Bill Boger, who has worked at the engineering unit for the past two years lends advice to students Kody Khiv and Maybel Giron as they work on their bridge. Members of the engineering unit also designed and built a bridge as an example of engineering principles used in the project. Holding that bridge is construction manager Jason Fortin.
