Pilgrim Senior Center

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Chess players wanted at the Pilgrim Senior Center. Join in this game of strategy on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Billiards Room. They will teach new players, so come give it a try.

Evening square dance classes coming to pilgrim senior center. Pilgrim Senior Center to introduce new evening Adult Enrichment Square Dance Program. Classes are Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Participants must be 18 years old. Call Kathleen at 468-4074 for more information.

Tri-City Elks

Roger Ceresi & The All Starz New Year's Eve “Living The Dream” Dec. 31. Music 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.  Tickets are $20 per person. Includes noisemakers and champagne toast. Seating is limited. Advance purchase of tickets is strongly advised. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in the Lounge during regular business hours Monday through Thursday; lodge opens at 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Country Line Dancing Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $8 per person, and the instructor is Lori Enos. Come on down with your boots and kick up your heals.

Zumba will take place on Tuesday evenings beginning at 6 p.m.  Cost is $6 per person and the instructor is Lorraine Blanchard.

Free Community Lunch

A free community lunch and food pantry will be held Dec. 30 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Everyone is invited to participate.

Gaspee Seniors

The next meeting of the Gaspee Seniors will be held Jan. 2 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Pilgrim Parkway. They will be playing the brown bag game; bring a gift in a bag ($1:00) and also playing left/right game. Meeting begins at 1:30. All are welcome.

Ocean State Toastmasters

Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting Jan. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road. Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The club is one of some 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Founded in 1963, Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island. Visit and see what they are all about. CHADD Support Group

The Rhode Island Chapter of CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD) welcomes the community to a free support group. A lively, honest discussion will be had after watching movie clips related to ADHD Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Pine Room at Bradley Hospital in East Providence. Siblings and Spouses are especially welcome to listen to the ways others have experienced and coped with the challenges people have with ADHD. There is no charge, although donations are appreciated. Ocean State Orchid Society Meeting

The Ocean State Orchid Society January meeting will be held Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at La Quinta Inn and Suites Coventry, 4 Universal Boulevard, Coventry (Centre of NE Mall, next to BJ's). This meeting will feature an extra-large grow and show table. What do you have in winter bloom and what was your holiday party gift? Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 4 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. URI Theatre Auditions for Upcoming Show

The University of Rhode Island Theatre Department is calling for actors to audition for two productions, “Measure For Measure” by William Shakespeare and the URI Theatre’s production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s, “Mary Poppins.” The auditions are open to the public. Bird Feeder Donations

Wild Birds Unlimited, Warwick, annually conducts a feeder swap event, which generates bird feeders for donations within the community. The feeders are completely refurbished and as a result are perfectly functional. The feeder swap has resulted in more than 50 feeders over the past four years and the feeders have been given to local schools, senior centers and assisted living facilities. If you are interested in obtaining a feeder for a deserving destination, contact Richard Del Sesto at 826-0606 or wbuwarwick@yahoo.com.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

Physical Fitness Training

A local non-profit will bring organized basketball, nutrition education and physical fitness training to 160-200 youth in Warwick. The program will run through Feb. 28, and players only pay a $25 fee for the entire season. They are a registered 501©3 non-profit, and they are currently close to capacity. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
