Tri-City Elks

Ocean State Parrot Head & Tri-City Elks present Jimmy Buffet Night on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. This is a fundraiser for Operation Stand Down RI. Black Dog BBQ food along with burgers and hot dogs for you to purchase. The Cabana Boys will provide music for all at the Tiki Bar. All ticket money raised will go directly to Operation Stand Down. Tickets are $20 per person and are available in the lounge during regular business hours and also the night of the event.

Country line dancing returns! It is time to put your boots back on beginning Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. Instructor is Lori Enos, and the classes are $8 per class.

Car show continues every Thursday evening beginning at 5 p.m. Tiki Bar is open, and there is food you can purchase. Come enjoy the DJ playing the oldies, enjoy the wonderful cars from days gone by, and have a beverage at the Tiki Bar. Motorcycles are welcome.

Grand Opening of Lydia’s Luxury Items

A yard sale and grand opening for Lydia’s Luxury Items for Less will be held Sept. 1 at the Church of the Transfiguration, 1665 Broad Street, Cranston. Gently used and new clothing at a reduced rate and school supplies will be available. The indoor/outdoor yard sale will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Lydia’s from 10 a.m.-12 noon.

Hurricane of ’38 Exhibit

On the 80th anniversary of the Hurricane of '38 the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society has mounted an exhibit of photos and diary records of Rhode Islanders who lived through that devastating storm. The display will be on view through the month of September at the East Greenwich Free Library, 82 Peirce Street. The public is invited to an opening reception Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. Meet and talk to people who lived through the storm. The Preservation Society plans to record the experiences of anyone who remembers that historic event. Chatham Village Center

The Chatham Village Garden Club will meet Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center on West Shore Road in Conimicut. This will be the first meeting after summer break and members will review the programs scheduled for October through June of 2019.

Cranston Senior Guild

Cranston Senior Guild’s next meeting will take place Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive, Warwick. There will be a short meeting, followed by bingo, refreshments and a raffle.  All men and women age 55 years plus are welcome to join. Membership is $12 for the year. Cranston residency is not required. Plan on coming for a fun afternoon.

Chorus of Kent County

Rehearsals for The Chorus of Kent County will begin Sept. 6 for the upcoming winter semester. Membership will be open through Sept. 20. Rehearsal time is a 7-9 p.m. in the Chorus Room of West Warwick High School. If interested come by starting at 6:30 to sign up and pay dues ($25). Big E Bus Trip

The Kent County YMCA is sponsoring a bus trip to the Big E Fair in Springfield, Mass. Sept. 22. The bus leaves the Kent County YMCA at 7 a.m. and departs the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. The cost for the trip is $50 for members and $60 for program participants. Children under the age of 5 costs $38 and program participants 5 and under cost $48. Children 5 and under have free admission to the fair so the cost is for bus fare only. For more information call the Kent County YMCA at 828-0130.

Greenwood Volunteer Barbecue

Greenwood Volunteer Fire Co. #1 will hold their annual barbecue fundraiser and raffle Sept. 30 from 1-5 p.m. Usually, the event is held at the Greenwood Fire Museum and Hall, beneficiary of the barbecue. This year, however, it will be held at the East Greenwich Veteran Fireman’s Club at 80 Queen St. Tickets are $25, half price for kids, and may be bought by contacting Bob Carlow at 302-1120.

Chow Day

Chow Day will be held Sept. 30 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Delmyra Kennels, 191 Ten Rod Road, Exeter. All breeds are welcome. Fun classes for Chows (furriest, best feet, looks like owner, friendliest, best trick, traveled furthest, costume contest) and more. The event will include: agility match & run throughs; Rally Obedience match & run throughs; Canine Good Citizen & Tricks Title Testing; pet portraits (fall motif); canine games (for dogs and their humans); tricks training workshop (you and your dog learn tricks together); Parade of Rescues; silent auction items (items for dogs and canine motif for humans); and food. Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company Rental

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 6 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. U.S. Masters Swimming Program

The Kent County YMCA has a Masters Swim Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 a.m. and Sundays from 5-6:45 p.m. starting in May and running through August.  This aquatic fitness program, for anyone aged 18 or older, offers encouragement, camaraderie and support. Learn drills, improve stroke technique and proper breathing. Pilgrim Senior Center

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences.
