Tri-City Elks

Blood drive will be held March 30 from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Breakfast will be served to all donors. Give the gift of life.

Meat raffles on Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. There will be four tables loaded with meat and prized. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.  Proceeds will be donated to Rosemary's Wish Kids.

Country line dancing continues from 7-9 p.m. Monday evenings with Lori Enos. Cost is $8 per person. Come kick up your heels and have some fun.

Yoga Classes with Lorraine Blanchard. The Vinyasa Yoga flow will embody strength, balance, and flexibility. Please bring your own Yoga mat. Cost is $6 per person.

Pots with Pizzazz

Learn how to create planters with pizzazz at the Cindy Wood Garden Club on Tuesday, March 19. Garden designer Jana Millbocker will show how to brighten shady spots with pops of color, create focal points and eye-catching garden entrances with stunning container gardens. Her illustrated program will inspire you to combine easily available plant materials to create these garden jewels for your patio or garden. Her program begins at 11 am at the East Greenwich Library, 87 Peirce Street. It is free and open to the public. 

Blood Drive

For her senior project, Pilgrim High School student Julianna Cameron is running a blood drive March 20 from 3-7 p.m. at the William Shields Post, 662 West Shore Road.

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held March 21 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway, at 6:30 p.m. (right near Pilgrim High School). This will be the last planning meeting for their breakfast on April 6. If you would like to volunteer for the breakfast, order tickets (reservations required), donate a raffle item or bake a breakfast item for the pastry table or any information on any events call Brenda at 467-2692. Quarter Auction  

Leukemia and Lymphoma candidate for Woman of the Year Marguerite Morris is hosting a quarter auction March 22 at Knights of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m. $10 for 3 paddles. Raffle and 50/50 tickets also available. Light food provided. No outside alcohol or beverages. Bar will be open. Some featured vendors are Pampered Chef, Avon, Thirty-one, Paparazzi, Lularue, Touchstone and Scentsy. Tickets can be purchased in advance at pages.mwoy/ri/ri19/mmorris.

Phantom of the Opera

Have you always wanted to see “The Phantom of the Opera?” How about dinner before, and transportation to the show? No worrying where you are going to park and how far you will have to walk to PPAC. The Kent County YMCA is offering a bus trip to the PPAC to see “Phantom of the Opera,” which also includes a buffet dinner before the show, on March 28. The cost for YMCA members is $80 and the cost for those that are not current members of the Kent County YMCA is $90.  Email Dom Doiron at ddoiron@gpymca.org.

Fish Count

Buckeye Brook Coalition is looking for volunteers for this year’s Direct Fish Count in conjunction with RI Fish and Game. Training will be March 28 from 5-6 p.m. or March 30 from 10-11 a.m. Location is lower parking lot of Knights of Columbus on Sandy Lane. Warwick. Requirements: 10 minutes at most once a week, at a time of your choosing, to observe water temperature, water depth, and count how many river herring you observed. The count will run from April into May. Returning surveyors just need to contact Jennifer so she can add you into the schedule. This is a very easy opportunity to help collect valuable data that allows the fishery councils to make decisions on fishery management. If you have any questions contact jennifer.brooks@dem.ri.gov.

Cranston Seniors Guild

Cranston Senior Guild’s next meeting will take place April 3 at 1 p.m. at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive, Warwick. After a short meeting, Alison Bologna, the award-winning journalist who anchors NBC 10 News Sunrise, will speak about Shri Yoga. Alison opened Shri Studio in downtown Pawtucket with the mission of offering yoga and wellness classes to an urban community. Following Alison’s presentation, there will be refreshments and a raffle. Men and women 55 or older are welcome to join the Cranston Senior Guild. Dues are $12 a year. Cranston residency is not required. The next meeting will be held on May 8.

Paint Night

The Oakland Beach Volunteer Fire Company Women’s Auxiliary is hosting a paint night April 5 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and are available for purchase at the bar or by contacting Gail Becker at 207-3786, Barbara Napolitano at 524-8013 or Becky Kotch at 829-1713. Purchase tickets early as a limited number of tickets will be sold. They will be painting a beach scene on a 16x20 canvas frame. The instructor for the event is Carla from Art In A Cart. Snacks will be provided and there will be a cash bar. The event is being held at OBVFC (Fire Barn), 645 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick.

Mary's Way of the Cross: Walking with the Mother of Jesus

Join St. Benedict's Contemporary Choir "Keeping The Faith" April 5 at 6:30 p.m. at 135 Beach Avenue, Warwick, as they present their version of "Mary's Way of the Cross."  Experience Stations of the Cross through the heart of Jesus' mother with live actors and music and a moving Lenten devotion.

Ham & Bean Dinner

Slocum Grange, 86 Slocum Road, North Kingstown, will be having a ham and bean dinner at the Grange Hall April 6 at 5:30 p.m. The menu consist of homemade baked beans, ham, cole slaw, beets, brown bread and homemade pies, coffee and tea. Flea Market Vendors Wanted

Ss. John and James Parish, 17 St. John Street, West Warwick, is hosting a Flea Market on May 4 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. They are looking for vendors to rent tables, $20 for a 6-foot table-indoors and $15 for a 6-foot table outside (no food vendors). Historic Cemetery Ceremony

The Pawtuxet Rangers will participate in a ceremony May 5 at 2 p.m. at Cranston Historic Cemetery #36 on Park Avenue in Cranston. The Rangers, Cranston Historic Cemetery Commission, Sons of the American Revolution and Society of Colonial Wars will be some of the participants. The cemetery has had a refurbishment and the group will recognize four Revolutionary War veterans, one of whom was amongst the first officers on the Continental Navy. There will be a new veterans grave marker unveiled and an interpretive sign.

Apply for Boys and Girls State 2019

The American Legion Boys State and the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will take place June 16-21 at St. Andrew's School in Barrington. The course is on the workings of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Students form their own political parties, formulate party platforms and conduct spirited campaigns for public office. All high school juniors are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are available. Expenses are paid for by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 5 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. New Counseling Program Available

If you are experiencing a substance use problem with alcohol or drugs or a substance use problem coupled with a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety, a new program at Thrive Behavioral Health (formerly known as The Kent Center) may be right for you. Thrive is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling substance use disorders and co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. Green Airport Military Lounge Seeks Volunteers

The Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO) Military Lounge at T.F. Green Airport is seeking volunteers to staff the lounge. Open 12 hours every day, the primary goal of the lounge is to provide a welcoming place for military service members, veterans and their families to relax and regroup during their travels. Approaching six years in operation, nearly 15,000 visitors have passed through the lounge doors. Yet, it’s the dedicated volunteers who keep the lounge open, clean, stocked and comfortable while providing a welcome smile and warm greeting to each visitor. Volunteers are asked to work four-shifts and may select their own work schedule but are asked to dedicate a minimum of four hours per month. Also, volunteers enjoy free parking at the airport. A great opportunity to give back to the community and thank our active duty and veterans for their service. All volunteers are required to fill out the RIMO application, acquire a background check, and attend a short training class. New volunteers can begin the process by contacting the RIMO office at 921-4393.

Women’s Auxiliary

A women’s auxiliary meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the William Shields Jr. American Legion Post 43, 662 West Shore Road. It is an open invitation to all eligible women who wish to participate in supporting our veterans. Eligibility to join is related to a veteran as a mother, wife, sister, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, grandmother or step-relative.

Pilgrim Senior Center

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Greenwich Bay Women’s Club

Aphasia Conversation Group

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences.
