In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence (RICADV) will hold a statewide vigil to remember and honor all victims lost to domestic violence. Beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, the vigil will take place at the Rhode Island State House, where participants will be invited to hold candles, read “Silent Witness” stories of Rhode Islanders who lost their lives to domestic violence, and listen to live music and poetry. Speakers will include domestic violence survivors, family members of victims lost to domestic violence, and advocates.

As a backdrop to the event, the Rhode Island State House will be lit in purple – the official color of domestic violence awareness – from October 14 to 20. The public is invited to share their photos and reasons for supporting survivors on social media using the hashtag #purpleforpeace.

The RICADV’s member agencies, including Blackstone Valley Advocate Center; the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County; the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center; Sojourner House; and Women’s Resource Center, will be represented at the vigil. The event is free and open to the public.
