The Warwick Vets girls’ basketball team trounced the Mt. Pleasant Kilties 50-18 on Tuesday night at Vets.

Vets freshman Caitlyn Fallon led the way with 16 points while her teammate, junior Kat Raposo, added 11 points.

Kinayah Gordon had 10 points for Mt. Pleasant.

Gordon scored the first points on a jumper to put Mt. Pleasant up 2-0. Vets would retaliate when Raposo fed Brianna DeRobbio underneath for a layup. Then, Warwick’s Mackenzie Hough scored on a driving layup, giving Warwick the lead at 4-2.

Mt. Pleasant’s Erica Scoby buried a jumper and knotted the game at 4 with 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Mt. Pleasant took the lead when Gordon was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 5-4 lead. But after Raposo missed a jumper, Fallon was there for the putback, giving Vets the lead at 6-5 with 10:19 left in the half. Next, Raposo was fouled and made both of her free throws, increasing the ’Canes’ lead to 8-5. Gordon made one of two free throws to pull Mt. Pleasant within 8-6. However, moments later, Warwick would blow the game open.

Mackenzie Hough started with a dazzling layup that hit high off the backboard before falling in for two points, increasing the Warwick edge to 10-6. Next, Hough fed Fallon underneath for a layup to increase the lead to six.

Warwick would increase the lead to 16-6 when Raposo came up with a steal and scored on a breakaway layup. After Destinee Charette’s shot missed, Raposo was there for the rebound and she put in a floater off the glass to increase the Warwick lead to 19-6 with 6:38 left. Emma McGrath and Raposo made four free throws and extended the Warwick lead to 23-6.

Mt. Pleasant senior Daranice Smith made a layup before Warwick’s Fallon made a shot inside off the window, making it 25-8 Warwick. Then, Mt. Pleasant sophomore Nahlah Thomas made a jumper, but Fallon would erase it when she nailed another dagger for Warwick. Then, with 1:30 to go in the first half, Charette nailed a jumper to increase the Warwick lead to 29-10. Next, Fallon made two free throws and scored on a layup after Raposo stole the ball. Warwick would head into the break with a 33-10 lead.

In the second half, Charette got a steal and dished to Raposo for the easy two, extending Vets’ lead to 35-10. Then, Hough stole the ball and dished to Raposo, who came up short, but Fallon was there for the putback to build Warwick a 37-10 cushion with 12 minutes to play.

Next, Hough made a jumper to increase the lead to 39-10. Then, McGrath fed DeRobbio underneath for a layup, increasing the lead to 41-10.

Mt. Pleasant kept fighting, mainly Gordon. She drilled a jumper with 9:11 left and she wasn’t done. Next, she came down and banked in a jump shot, pulling her squad within 41-14. After Emma Nason scored a point at the charity stripe for Warwick, Gordon struck again, making another jumper. Then, with 4:53 to play, Gordon continued her rampage, scoring on a driving layup and making the score 42-18.

Warwick showed some good ball movement with at least three players touching the ball before Charette scored off a dish from Fallon. Hough scored the final bucket of the game when she scored on a layup to top off the ’Canes’ 50-18 blowout win.

Warwick head coach Owen Paquet was thrilled with the team’s victory.

“It’s a hard-fought game,” Paquet said. “Mt. Pleasant always brings in a tough, hustling team so it’s nice to see that we can compete with a team that hustles and that has a lot of heart. If we can keep this momentum going and put a half-court offense together and get everybody clicking with some type of nucleus and chemistry going we should be all right.”
