’Canes drop season finale on Senior Night

The Warwick Vets girls’ volleyball team won the first game on Wednesday night before Cranston East rattled off three unanswered to defeat the ’Canes on senior night, 3-1.

In its final regular season match in its home gym, Vets came out on fire against a 12-4 East team, cruising to a 25-14 victory in the opening game to take a quick, 1-0 advantage.

Junior Arianna Pafume helped to spark Vets early with three key kills in the first game.

“We had a very good start,” Vets head coach Jean McGarry said. “They beat us last time so coming out and beating them in the first game was a surprise, but a good surprise. We played so well, and then we had complete and total break downs.”

After that first game, the roles for the two teams flipped, as East emerged as the dominant team, converting on several miscues by Vets.

The ’Bolts went on to take the next two games by identical 25-17 scores.

East head coach Meaghan McGonagle admitted that the hype of the night may have gotten to her team early on.

“We talked about Warwick Vets coming in, this was a scary game for me,” McGonagle said. “It was their last game and senior night, so I knew that they were going to come out on fire. I think we realized that we came out a little slow and a little light, then we picked it up.”

In the final three games, East was able to pull away behind some strong hitting from McKenzie Richards and powerful serving from Emma Jutras.

Richards finished the match with 15 kills and five digs, while Jutras compiled 32 assists, eight aces and four digs. Six of Jutras’s aces came during the fourth and final game of the match to secure the win for East.

McGarry felt that her team could have put up a more consistent effort, as it showed what it was capable of out of the gates.

“We were making really bad decisions, simple mistakes and we couldn’t fix them,” McGarry said.

With the loss, Vets failed to secure the final playoff spot in Division II. The ’Canes fell to 5-11 on the season, forcing them to play West Warwick on Friday night in a play-in game for the last playoff spot.

Unfortunately, Vets came out on the losing end of that one too, with the Wizards moving on to play Tolman in the preliminary round tonight.
