CAPTAIN MARVEL

* * *

(Sci-fi superhero adventure)

Brie Larson stars as Carol/Vers, a U.S. Air Force pilot who crashes and is somehow transported to the planet of the Kree, Hala, where she is trained to be an inter-space superhero. How all this takes place is a bit confusing to those of us who don't follow all this Marvel comic stuff, so if you are like me, just try to keep up.

Jude Law plays her trainer and leader, fighting the alien Skrulls. They are all looking for this illuminated blue cube for whatever reason. During one of the many chases, Vers lands up crashing into a Blockbuster store (It's the ’90s, so they are still around). Samuel L. Jackson plays a younger Nick Fury and eventually joins up with her.

She finds her way to the home of her former best friend Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) – not quite sure how – and tries to understand how she got from there to become an outer space superhero. If you are following me so far, take it further as she tries to save a group of Skrulls as the Kree chase her around the universe.

Great special effects and background music enhance the constant action, much of which looks familiar to other Marvel movies. It all comes down to the final battle, which involves my favorite character in the film, an orange cat named Goose.

At times confusing, at least for the uninitiated, and at times familiar to the genre, "Captain Marvel" goes on too long. At the end, you learn how she gets her name, and during the credits find out what is coming next for Captain Marvel.

Rated PG-13, with lots of violence.
