Carpenter Memorial Tournament a success

Last weekend marked the first annual Jared Carpenter Memorial Basketball Tournament which was held on Saturday at Scituate High School.

Carpenter, who was 14 years old at the time of his passing, was an avid basketball player and fan, he also spent time playing for the Warwick Police Athletic League as a youngster.

Scituate senior Taylor Parker organized the 3-on-3 tournament in honor of her friend, who she met through basketball as she refs at the recreational level, for her senior project. Although she expected it to be a nice community gathering, it exceeded her expectations even further in terms of participants as well as the total money raised.

“I think the tournament was phenomenal, so many people came and we raised $2700. It was so successful, we sold so many raffle prizes in the 50-50, the concession stand was awesome, it was an amazing experience overall. The success of the day was a celebration for Jared, that’s what it was really about.” said Parker of the tournament, which hosted a total of 28 teams and 250 people in total.

Among those in the crowd was the Carpenter family, which included Jared’s parents and siblings. Many people from the community that were close with the Carpenters showed their support, and Parker was excited to make his family happy.

“We put together a slideshow in memory of Jared and it was awesome, it left the Carpenters speechless. They couldn’t have been happier with the amount of support and the people that came to see them. It was a phenomenal experience. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome,” said Parker. “Throughout the day a lot of the support came from the people they have known through basketball over the years from all of the different teams that they have played with so it felt like a reunion. Jake and Crystal could not have been happier.”

Although Parker will be graduating in the coming months, she and her family hope to continue the tournament for years to come, and also look to expand and improve the product for next year’s event.

“My sister is already thinking about doing the second annual Jared Carpenter memorial tournament, and we hope to make it even bigger and better than this year,” said Parker.
