Schools and organizations throughout Warwick will pay homage to our nation’s veterans with programs and ceremonies this week and next honoring those who have served and still serve. Veterans’ Day, which is Sunday, Nov. 11, is being observed on Monday, Nov. 12.

Warwick Neck Elementary School students in grades 3-5 will once again visit the Warwick Neck Lighthouse this Wednesday at 10 a.m. to honor veterans from the community. Sponsored by the Warwick Neck Improvement Association and the U.S. Coast Guard, the event normally attracts a large crowd of veterans, parents and city officials alike.

Also on Wednesday, Bishop Hendricken High School will host keynote speaker Michael A. Montigny, a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and author of “A Few Good Angels,” a book which details his deployment and how “a few good angels saved his life numerous times while he served there.” Montigny served as a machine gunner at the Battle of Khe Sanh in 1967, a battle that turned into a five-month siege, according to an email from Joe Cichon, who organized the event.

As part of the event, the school will honor the memory of Army Sergeant Mikeal Miller, who was mortally wounded during a deployment in Afghanistan in 2006. Miller was only 22 years old when he died, “only four years older than some of our present students,” said Cichon in his email. A Gold Star family, Don and Karen McKenzie, brother and sister-in-law of Richard McKenzie, BHHS '63, who died in Vietnam, will also be present.

On Thursday, veterans will meet with students at St. Rose of Lima School starting at 9 a.m. Also on Thursday, Holliman Elementary School will conduct their annual Veterans Day appreciation event, which normally draws members of the state’s General Assembly to speak.

On Friday, Pilgrim High School will host its fourth annual “Patriots Honoring Patriots” event from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. A formal ceremony will take place, and the annual “Jeans for Troops” campaign, sponsored by the GiGo Fund, will be working to help members of the armed forces get funding for housing, healthcare, education and employment. Those looking to support the cause are encouraged to wear blue jeans and a patriotic shirt to show their support for the cause.

Also on Friday, the All American Assisted Living facility on Tollgate Farm Road will be hosting an event for veterans with refreshments served from 2-4 p.m. Those interested are asked to RSVP by calling 889-5905.

On Monday, Hendricken will host a pancake breakfast for veterans from across the state starting at 7:30 a.m. There is no RSVP required for veterans, and the pancakes will be plentiful. Dunkin Donuts and Dave’s Marketplace have agreed to sponsor the event, which is being organized by Bill Johnson, a Hendricken coach and teacher.

A laying of a wreath will be conducted at Warwick Veterans Middle School on Monday by the Warwick Veterans Council.
