Back when Jaime “Hurricane” Clampitt first started boxing professionally in the 90s, not many people tuned into the women’s side of the sport, not even boxing fans.

However, she, along with a handful of others, stuck with the sport and helped bring it to the prominence that we see today.

With her commitment to the sport, as well as her success in the ring, she was recently named a member of the upcoming 2020 International Boxing Woman’s Hall of Fame class.

Clampitt, who is currently co-owner and head trainer at On The Ropes in Warwick, was surprised when she heard the news.

“It was a total surprise. One of the girls that I train who is an amateur boxer actually texted me saying, ‘Why didn’t you tell me about this?’ And I told her, ‘Because I didn’t even know.’ I was very surprised and excited when I found out.,” said Clampitt.

Clampitt finished her professional career with a record of 23-5-1. She took home the International Boxing Association’s Women’s Super Lightweight and Lightweight championships.

Clampitt was proud to receive the honor, and takes pride in the fact that she is one of the original stars in the sport.

“Me and the other girls that are being inducted, we are kind of the pioneers of the sport. We started boxing in the 90s when it wasn’t a big thing, but we stuck with it for a very long time, trying to pave the way for women nowadays. It’s really exciting to meet some of these women, and I’m looking forward to seeing some of them that I have already met,” said Clampitt.

Although Clampitt was one of the top female boxers in the country during her career, she never looked too far ahead in the future and at the impact that she was making on others.

“A lot of the people at the gym will tell me that it’s so cool that I have been able to do all these things and that I am on the internet, and all of that. To me, I was just doing my job,” said Clampitt. “I feel very fortunate that I get to do something that I love every day. It was never something that crossed my mind, when I heard the news I felt very blessed because I had put so much time into this life.”

Clampitt is also excited to share the honor with her partners at On The Ropes, and to be a part of something special in Warwick.

“It’s great, I feel very lucky to be a part of it and to kind of lead the boxing side of the gym,” said Clampitt. “We have created this family and it’s a really positive place. It’s really exciting.
