Hendricken claims 26th straight class championship

The Bishop Hendricken indoor track and field team cruised to its 26th consecutive Class A Championship last week in Providence with a score of 120, topping second-place La Salle by 30 points.

The Hawks were led by their relay teams in the win, getting top-3 finishes in each event and helping push Hendricken past other top teams such as the Rams.

“We’ve worked hard on our relays and our relays are doing well. We’re strong in the 4x200, the guys on that team have given us their best, the 4x800 team is very good and the 4x400 is very good. We’re going to need them to continue to do well needless to say,” said Hendricken coach Jim Doyle, who was proud of the all-around effort of the team. “Our (distance) runners are strong, our throwers are strong, we have some young kids in the high jump that are doing well. It has to be a big team performance for us to win at the state meet.”

The Hawks and Rams have been neck and neck over the past decade, and Doyle expects it to be no different in the upcoming state championship meet.

“We knew the events that we would do well in but we were also very conscientious of La Salle and their team … we expected them to do very well in the sprint events, they have some good distance runners,” said Doyle. “(The win) gives us a lot of momentum. It’s tremendous, it’s a great honor. We know that we have some weaknesses where we need to improve, we know that La Salle is the team to beat. It’s going to be a tight battle, we are going to need to do our job and have our best performance.”
