Saturday’s Symphony in the Park event at Pawtuxet Park, followed by fireworks at Salter Grove, added to the buildup as the 2019 Gaspee Days celebration nears its conclusion.
The Saturday concert featured Music by Merlan Ensemble, the Pawtuxet Rangers and the 55-member Warwick Symphony Orchestra, which was augmented by a dozen members of the Cranston East Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra program included “America the Beautiful,” selections from “Les Miserables,” “Uptown Hoedown” and “Remembering the Beatles.”
Gaspee Days President Ryan Giviens opened the symphony’s portion of the outdoor concert with a moment of silence for William Plumb, who died on Thursday. An avid supporter of the annual celebration and a former assistant Warwick harbormaster, Plumb was at the helm of the craft – most often an inflatable – that carried the mayor and usually one or two others to set the Gaspee facsimile ablaze for at least 30 years.
Gaspee Days concludes this coming weekend, with the Ecumenical Service, 5K Foot Race and 54th Parade on Saturday followed by the colonial encampment, Sunday in the Park festivities and ceremonial burning of the Gaspee on Sunday.
