DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On Oct. 16 at approximately 9:14 p.m. Officers Gavin McVeigh and Jacob Elderkin were disabled to a possible disabled motor vehicle in the roadway at Main Avenue and Warwick Industrial Avenue. While en route, dispatch advised the officers that it was a motor vehicle collision and that the Fire Department was on the way.

At the scene, the officers began a motor vehicle collision investigation. They found a black Ford Escape facing west which was blocking the right lane and some of the left lane of the westbound section of the road. The officers’ noted that there was a large amount of skid marks traveling towards the curb line and then back to where the vehicle had stopped. The officers also observed that the car had a flat rear passenger side tire and that the front tire appeared to have a broken axle.

Officers found a driver and passenger in the car, and later identified the operator as Kyle Langlais, 31, of 2 Danby St. in West Warwick. Both parties told the officers that they were okay and refused any medical care.

While Officer McVeigh was speaking with the individuals from the driver’s side of the vehicle, he noted a very strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from the car. He reported that Langlais exhibited signs of intoxication, and that he handed over his passport instead of his license, saying he did not have his license with him. Langlais told the officers that he did not know how the accident occurred, and that he was traveling back to West Warwick when something happened to his car. According to the report, he told the officers that he had been drinking at Chili’s, and that he consumed a root beer and Jack Daniels, as well as some vodka.

Langlais then agreed to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests. During the tests, he reportedly told the officers that he had “[expletive] up” and that he didn’t want to take any more tests, saying, “What’s the point because we both know I am drunk.”

Based upon the officers’ experience and training, it was determined that Langlais would be arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters, where he later refused a breathalyzer test. Officers noted that throughout the investigation and arrest, Langlais was remorseful, apologetic as well as cooperative.

Langlais was charged with driving under the influence, first offense and refusal to submit to a chemical test. He was given a court summons and later released to a sober adult.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

While on routine patrol traveling east on Airport Road on Oct. 18 around 10:12 a.m., Officer John Curley clocked a vehicle traveling 65 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. He then conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area of 300 Airport Rd.

There he met with the driver, identified as Korissa Herrington, 23, of 15 Myrtle Ave. in Johnston. She stated that she did not have an active license and provided a Rhode Island identification card. Background checks confirmed that Herrington’s license was suspended. She was subsequently issued a summons for speeding and for operating a vehicle with a suspended license. Herrington was then released at the scene and the vehicle was then driven away by a licensed operator.

WARRANT

On Oct. 18 around 1:32 p.m., Officer John Curley was traveling on Warwick Avenue southbound when he observed a minivan traveling in the left lane. The minivan then cut directly in front of a vehicle that was traveling in the right hand lane, almost making contact with the vehicle and causing the operator to slam on the car’s brakes to avoid a collision, according to the report.

The vehicle then began to accelerate, and the officer clocked the van traveling for approximately a mile and a half at 50 miles per hour. A traffic stop was then conducted in the area of 1201 Warwick Ave. Officer Curley then approached the van and advised of the reason for the stop. While conducting checks on both the driver and the passenger, it was discovered that the passenger, identified as Henry Cruz, 42, of 24 Babcock St. in Providence, had an outstanding warrant from the Sixth District Court. He was then taken into custody without issue and transported to police headquarters where he was processed. Cruz was later transported to the ACI.

VANDALISM

Officer Tyler Stone responded to the McDonald’s at 820 Post Rd. on Oct. 19 around 6:30 p.m. for a malicious damage to property report.

Upon arrival the officer spoke with a restaurant manager, who stated that a BB pellet was shot into his store’s front window. The officer observed the damage, which the manager was unsure of what time the vandalism occurred. The manager stated that all the cameras in the restaurant were located on the inside and that none had a view of the outside. There are currently no suspects or witnesses.

LARCENY

At approximately 7:55 a.m. on Oct. 20, Officer Rose Michael was dispatched to Kent Hospital on Toll Gate Road for a larceny report. At the hospital she met with a member of the security team, who stated that three brass hose connections were missing from outside the building. The connections were functioning and observed when inspected earlier that month. A report was taken and forwarded to detectives for review.

SHOPLIFTING

On Oct. 19 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Officer James Vible responded to the Bald Hill Road Walmart for a report of a shoplifter in custody.

At the store the officer met with a member of Loss Prevention, who advised that he observed a woman suspect, later identified as Christina Campbell, 33, of 34 Howland Ave. in Warwick, walking throughout the store. She selected numerous beauty, personal hygiene and allergy relief products, which she allegedly concealed in a bag. She then proceeded to pass all points of purchase and left the store without paying. She was then approached by security and brought back into the store.

Inside, a total of $302.90 was recovered, and the store indicated that they wished to press charges. A background check revealed that Campbell had an active Third District Court warrant. She was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters.

At the station it was determined that Campbell would be charged with felony shoplifting based on her previous record and due to the total value of the merchandise taken during the above. She was held for court in the morning.
