DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On Oct. 12 at approximately 8 p.m., Officer Derek Mourato observed a car traveling westbound on Centerville Road that was swerving in and out of its lane. A traffic stop was initiated nearby the Pizza Hut, at which time the vehicle then stopped in the middle of the roadway. The car then swerved over the double yellow line and turned left instead of right into a parking lot.

The officer approached the vehicle and met with the driver, later identified as Shawn Angell, 25, of 10 Prospect Hill Ave. in West Warwick. According to the report, Angell advised that his license was suspended. While speaking with Angell, the officer detected the smell of alcohol and that he exhibited signs of intoxication. Angell said he was coming from a friend’s house and that he was on his way to cash a check. He told the officer that he had one alcoholic beverage that evening, then later said he had two. While officer Mourato was standing by the car door, he reported that he saw several empty Bud Light cans and fireball nip bottles in the operator’s door compartment.

Additional officers arrived on scene and Angell agreed to take a series of standardized sobriety tests. Based upon the officer’s experience and training, and Angell’s performance during the tests, it was determined that he would be placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters while his car was driven away by a sober driver.

At the station, Angell refused to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test. He was charged with driving under the influence, second offence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, laned roadway violations and driving on a suspended license third offense. He was later released to a sober adult.

BURGLARY

Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to Powhatan Street on Oct. 6 around 8 a.m. for a report of a break in where tools were taken.

At the scene he was met by the reporting party and victim, who stated that he is a contractor and was renovating the residence. When he arrived to work that morning, he noticed that tools had been taken out of one of the closets, and that more tools from that residence were missing. The tools taken included a Makita drill set, a Milwaukee sawzall, a DeWalt multi tool, a Makita hammer drill, and a tool belt with hammer with a combined value of approximately $920.

The window located on the west side of the residence appeared to be used as the entranceway for the suspect, and the front door was used as an exit. Part of the window was brought back to headquarters to be dusted for fingerprints. There were also two bags that had been left behind by the suspect, both were empty and had no identifying marks on them. There are currently no suspects.

RIDING MOWER STOLEN

On Oct. 4 at approximately 6:04 p.m., Officer Manuel Pacheco was dispatched to a West Shore Road residence for a report of a larceny. Dispatch had advised that the reporting party’s riding lawnmower has been stolen.

At the scene the officer met with the victim, who stated that he arrived home around 5 p.m. and found his green Craftsman riding mower, valued at $400, missing. He told the officer that the lawnmower had broken down in his side yard. He last saw the mower at approximately 8 a.m. when he left the house. There are currently no suspects, and the report was forwarded to detectives for review.

RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS

Officer Aaron Steere was traveling south on Interstate 95 on Oct. 8 around 3:53 p.m. when he observed a vehicle traveling in the high speed lane with an expired inspection sticker. As the vehicle passed him, the officer noted that there was a Florida dealer plate on the vehicle, which was hanging from the rear of the car inside a black nylon pouch with a clear front. Officer Steere noted in his report that his training led him to believe that the out of state dealer plates are commonly used unlawfully to transport vehicles without having them registered.

A check of the license plate revealed that it was currently stolen. A traffic stop was then initiated in the area of exit 12B. There contact was made with the driver, identified as Eliezer Mercado, 42, of 64 Miller Ave. Second Floor in Providence. Mercado advised that his license was currently suspended, and that he had no affiliation with any dealership and that he had borrowed the plate from a friend about two weeks prior.

Mercado was placed into custody and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with one count of receiving stolen goods, driving on a suspended license, improper use of registration, operating an unregistered vehicle, no insurance and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, which was found in his pants pocket during a search. He was later released with court summonses.

VIOLATION OF NO CONTACT ORDER

While traveling north on Post Road on Oct. 13 at approximately 5:46 p.m., Officer Ali Jaafar observed a car with a missing left side view mirror, rear view mirror and a heavily damaged windshield. According to the report, the windshield was damaged to the extent that it caused an obstruction to the entire right side due to shattering.

After conducting a traffic stop the officer met with the driver, identified as Hakim Coggins, 43, of 3 Salmon St. Apartment 1 in Providence. According to the officer’s narrative of events, Coggins immediately stated that he did not have a license and that there was a current no contact order between himself and his female passenger. Additional units were then requested for assistance.

Coggins was asked to step out of his vehicle, and the officer detected the scent of alcohol emanating from his breath. Coggins agreed to take a field sobriety test to be sure he was not operating under the influence. H completed the testing and passed.

However Coggins was detained until officers could confirm that the no contact order was active. Once confirmed that the order was in effect, he was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters. The female passenger, who was the registered owner, took possession of the vehicle and left the scene without incident. She was given a warning for her vehicle equipment violations.

Coggins was charged with violating a no contact order and driving with a suspended license. He was held until the following morning to appear in front of the bail commissioner.
