The Cranston Public Library 50th anniversary celebration continues with an open house at the William Hall Library on Saturday, September 22 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Embark on a scavenger hunt of the library, enjoy refreshments, enter a raffle, and listen to an entertaining presentation on the beautiful architecture of the library by author David Brussat. This program is free and open to all ages.
Join David Brussat for a talk about the architecture of the William Hall Library starting at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. Brussat is an architecture writer and blogger, known for his blog, Architecture Here and There and his book, "Lost Providence.”
In 1968, the public libraries of Cranston united to form one citywide system. Under the direction of former library director, Jim Giles, we began sharing materials and working together to increase accessibility for all Cranston residents. This year, we look forward to sharing this celebration with all of you. CPL will be holding open houses at our branch locations throughout the year.
In celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cranston Public Library they also want to celebrate the rich history of the William Hall Library which was built in 1927. The William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad Street in Cranston.
Garden City Center will celebrate its 70th year on Sept. 26 at the Gazebo from 6 to 8 p.m. Enjoy tasty treats from Garden City Center restaurants and relive the older days with their documentary and picture yourself in historical photos.

The Cranston Herald and Cranston Public Library are partnering for candidate forums. Please submit your questions for City Council and school committee candidates to pfts319@aol.com and tomg@rhodybeat.com. The forums will be Thursday, Oct. 18 for Citywide Council seats, and Thursday, Oct. 25 for school committee and ward candidates. Both forums start at 6 p.m. at Central library.
Defenders of Animals will host their annual fundraising Pasta Fest on Sept. 29 at the Edgewood Congregational Church. At a donation of $10 per person you will enjoy a pasta dinner and raffles between the hours of 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Edgewood Congregational Church is located at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. The Artists’ Exchange’s 11th annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival (FOOS) will be held on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside Artists' Exchange at 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston.

St. David's on the Hill, located at 200 Meshanticut Valley Parkway in Cranston, will host Blessing of the Animals at the 5 p.m. service on Sept. 29 and the 10 a.m. services on Sept. 30. All are welcome.
The Cranston Historical Society will celebrate the 188th Birthday of Governor Sprague’s 188th Birthday on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. with a buffet. The event will be held at the Sprague Mansion, located at 1351 Cranston St.
Enjoy the company of history enthusiasts and enjoy viewing some of the historical documents on display from the Sprague family collection.
Seating is limited and an $18 per person donation to the Society will help to continue the efforts of the organization.

The Cranston Senior Center will host their Annual Golf Tournament on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 at the Cranston Country Club, located at 69 Burlingame Rd. Senior Signature Diabetes Series for both Pre-Diabetics and Diabetics can attend a free 6-week program beginning on Sept. 25 to Oct. 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Provided by The American Diabetes Association, approximately 25% of Americans over the age of 60 have diabetes. To address the need the American Diabetes Association has developed an older adult outreach program Senior Signature Series. This series will provide tips and resources needed to help seniors address the challenge of preventing diabetes and keeping diabetes treatment from impairing their lifestyle or slowing them down. A Matter of Balance, “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls” will be held Mondays and Fridays beginning on Oct. 15 through Nov. 9; between the hours of 9 to 11:30 a.m. This nationally recognized program reduces the fear of falling and increases activity levels. Cranston Public Library will partner with the ACLU of RI for Banned Books Week event at William Hall Library on Sept. 26
The library and ACLU are celebrating Banned Books Week and the freedom to read with an event to educate people about books, the first amendment and censorship. The program will feature Rhode Island authors reading short passages from their favorite banned books. This program will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Banned Books Week 2018 is September 23-29. It brings together the entire book community including librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restricted in libraries and schools. The William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad Street in Cranston. For more information and a list of local authors participating please visit www.cranstonlibrary.org.
Join in on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cranston YMCA for an evening of celebration and charitable giving.
They will be hosting a Zumbathon Charity Event that will celebrate the life and legacy of Mariella Major. Mariella was a beloved member of our Cranston Community as well as a cherished Zumba instructor at the Cranston YMCA. The Y was a huge part of her life; she spent countless hours at the Y every day making memories with the members as well as volunteering her time in many other organizations in the community.
This will be a fun-filled night to remember all that she represented and the amazing woman that she was. All proceeds from this event will go toward special projects at the Cranston YMCA that were near and dear to Mariella’s heart. Tickets for this event are $15 per person and a raffle ticket for the door prize is included. There will be a 50/50 cash raffle, live DJ spinning music, as well as other vendors selling merchandise. Living Literature will present a 50-minute, four actor, dramatic interpretation of the Read Across Rhode Island selection “The Hate you Give” by Angie Thomas. The Edgewood Garden Club will hold its annual Bake & Plant Sale on Sept. 29 at the Pawtuxet Village Farmer’s Market, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The market is held behind the Shriners Imperial Room at One Rhodes Place in Edgewood. Proceeds will fund the club’s on-going civic beautification projects at Stillhouse Cove, the Village Playground, and the William Hall Library.
The club members will be selling home-baked goods, including harvest-related items, and plants, many culled from members’ gardens. These perennials are particularly suited to local growing conditions and will be hardy additions to any yard. The club is also collecting plant pots for recycling to the market’s farmers who’ll use them to start next year’s crops in late winter and early spring. Four-inch pots are preferred.

On Sept. 30, the 11th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk (SVDP RI) will be held in the Garden City Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take a Step to end Poverty! Join in for music, food, and family fun! Don't forget to bring food, clothing, and toiletry donations to help local friends in need. SVDP RI is a nonprofit organization that is comprised of 434 parish-based volunteers who provided nearly $2.5 million in assistance to needy Rhode Islanders since 2015.

Like every other year, the first day of fall happens on the Autumnal equinox. While it doesn't happen on the same exact date every single year, it happens around the same date each year. For 2018, the first day of fall is September 22, which is a Saturday. Let us all take a second to appreciate the possibilities that come with celebrating the first day of fall on a weekend.
