William Hall Library open house on September 22

The Cranston Public Library 50th anniversary celebration continues with an open house at the William Hall Library on Saturday, September 22 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Embark on a scavenger hunt of the library, enjoy refreshments, enter a raffle, and listen to an entertaining presentation on the beautiful architecture of the library by author David Brussat. This program is free and open to all ages.

Join David Brussat for a talk about the architecture of the William Hall Library starting at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. Brussat is an architecture writer and blogger, known for his blog, Architecture Here and There and his book, "Lost Providence.”

In 1968, the public libraries of Cranston united to form one citywide system. Under the direction of former library director, Jim Giles, we began sharing materials and working together to increase accessibility for all Cranston residents. This year, we look forward to sharing this celebration with all of you. CPL will be holding open houses at our branch locations throughout the year.

In celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cranston Public Library they also want to celebrate the rich history of the William Hall Library which was built in 1927. The William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad Street in Cranston.

Garden City to celebrate 70 years

Garden City Center will celebrate its 70th year on Sept. 26 at the Gazebo from 6 to 8 p.m. Enjoy tasty treats from Garden City Center restaurants and relive the older days with their documentary and picture yourself in historical photos.

There is a $20 admission with all proceeds going to the Cranston Historical Society. For more information, contact the Center at 942-2800.

The Cranston Herald and Cranston Public Library are partnering for candidate forums. Please submit your questions for City Council and school committee candidates to pfts319@aol.com and tomg@rhodybeat.com. The forums will be Thursday, Oct. 18 for Citywide Council seats, and Thursday, Oct. 25 for school committee and ward candidates. Both forums start at 6 p.m. at Central library.

Defenders of Animals Pasta Fest

Defenders of Animals will host their annual fundraising Pasta Fest on Sept. 29 at the Edgewood Congregational Church. At a donation of $10 per person you will enjoy a pasta dinner and raffles between the hours of 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Edgewood Congregational Church is located at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. City is seeking firefighter applications

The City of Cranston is accepting applications for firefighters now through November 2018. Note you will need to get your physical agility test card from the State. EMT-C is required at the time of employment. See Cranston City Hall Personnel Department for applications.

FOOS coming Sept. 23

The Artists’ Exchange’s 11th annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival (FOOS) will be held on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside Artists' Exchange at 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston.

Eat, drink, and make art on the block! Artists’ Exchange and Gateways to Change, Inc. invite all families, friends, and community to join the fun at the 11th annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival. The festival will feature live music and theater, community art installations, raffles, crafts, artisans, art activities and contests, delicious food, beer, wine, and much more. The festival is pet friendly and admission is free for everyone of all ages and abilities.

They are currently seeking volunteer performers, artists, artisans, and event volunteers for the 11th annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival. Blessing of the Animals

St. David's on the Hill, located at 200 Meshanticut Valley Parkway in Cranston, will host Blessing of the Animals at the 5 p.m. service on Sept. 29 and the 10 a.m. services on Sept. 30. All are welcome.

Celebrate Governor Sprague’s 188th Birthday

The Cranston Historical Society will celebrate the 188th Birthday of Governor Sprague’s 188th Birthday on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. with a buffet. The event will be held at the Sprague Mansion, located at 1351 Cranston St.

Enjoy the company of history enthusiasts and enjoy viewing some of the historical documents on display from the Sprague family collection.

Seating is limited and an $18 per person donation to the Society will help to continue the efforts of the organization.

To reserve your seat, send a check for $18 (per person) made payable to the Cranston Historical Society and mail to 1351 Cranston St., Cranston, RI 02920. After Sept. 13, call them at 944-9226 to see if seats are still available.

Cranston Senior Golf Tournament

The Cranston Senior Center will host their Annual Golf Tournament on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 at the Cranston Country Club, located at 69 Burlingame Rd. Everyone age 55 years or older are invited to participate. The $75 fee includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a banquet immediately following. Ms. or Jr. Miss Wheelchair applications now being accepted

Do you have what it takes to be the next Ms. or Jr Miss wheelchair Rhode Island? Must be 5-15 years of age for Jr. Miss and 21 years or older for Ms. and for both categories, applicants much use a wheelchair 100% of the time in public. This is not a beauty pageant, instead a competition of advocacy, education and making a difference. Empowering the state to make positive change. Coffee with Constituents

State Rep. Robert Lancia (District 16) and his wife, Maryann, invite members of the community to attend end-of-the-month “Constituent Coffees” on Sept. 29. The gatherings are held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Panera Bread in Cranston on the last Saturday each month and are meant as a forum to discuss local issues over coffee. At the Senior Center

The Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center, located at 1070 Cranston St., will offer the following programs and activities:

Book Club will meet on Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. to discuss “Driftwood Cottage” by Sherryl Woods. This romantic novel is about a single mom’s dreams of home and family that are tantalizingly within reach when she settles on the Chesapeake Shores.

Always Remember: Falls are Preventable will be held on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Center. Many people think falls are a normal part of aging. The truth is, They’re not! Most falls can be prevented, and you have the power to reduce your risk. September 22 to September 28 is National Fall Prevention Week. To promote greater awareness and understanding about older adult falls we invite you to “step-up” for fall prevention be attending this presentation.

Rhode Island Legal Services Seminar will be held on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. with guest speakers, Gretchen Bath, Esq. and Mary Curtin, Legal Assistant. At this seminar you will learn what Rhode Island Legal Services has to offer and what types of assistance they have available.

Coloring Book Club will meet on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with free materials provided. Plenty activities can help seniors engage their brains and increase motor skills. Now add to that coloring books for adults. Coloring can relax the brain, reduce anxiety and stress, and help you focus on the present while enhancing motor skills that begin to fade as we age. Join in and bring a friend and have some fun.

Senior Signature Diabetes Series for both Pre-Diabetics and Diabetics can attend a free 6-week program beginning on Sept. 25 to Oct. 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Provided by The American Diabetes Association, approximately 25% of Americans over the age of 60 have diabetes. To address the need the American Diabetes Association has developed an older adult outreach program Senior Signature Series. This series will provide tips and resources needed to help seniors address the challenge of preventing diabetes and keeping diabetes treatment from impairing their lifestyle or slowing them down. A Matter of Balance, “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls” will be held Mondays and Fridays beginning on Oct. 15 through Nov. 9; between the hours of 9 to 11:30 a.m. This nationally recognized program reduces the fear of falling and increases activity levels. The program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Who sold attend? Anyone concerned about falls. Anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength. Anyone who has fallen in the past. Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns. Upon successfully completing the free program each participant will receive a gift certificate. Banned Book Week

Cranston Public Library will partner with the ACLU of RI for Banned Books Week event at William Hall Library on Sept. 26

The library and ACLU are celebrating Banned Books Week and the freedom to read with an event to educate people about books, the first amendment and censorship. The program will feature Rhode Island authors reading short passages from their favorite banned books. This program will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Banned Books Week 2018 is September 23-29. It brings together the entire book community including librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restricted in libraries and schools. The William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad Street in Cranston. For more information and a list of local authors participating please visit www.cranstonlibrary.org.

Cranston Y Zumbathon to celebrate the life and legacy of Mariella Major

Join in on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cranston YMCA for an evening of celebration and charitable giving.

They will be hosting a Zumbathon Charity Event that will celebrate the life and legacy of Mariella Major. Mariella was a beloved member of our Cranston Community as well as a cherished Zumba instructor at the Cranston YMCA. The Y was a huge part of her life; she spent countless hours at the Y every day making memories with the members as well as volunteering her time in many other organizations in the community.

This will be a fun-filled night to remember all that she represented and the amazing woman that she was. All proceeds from this event will go toward special projects at the Cranston YMCA that were near and dear to Mariella’s heart. Tickets for this event are $15 per person and a raffle ticket for the door prize is included. There will be a 50/50 cash raffle, live DJ spinning music, as well as other vendors selling merchandise. They will be used in a slideshow during the Zumbathon and they are also encouraging everyone to “Party in Purple” for Mariella the night of the event.

Lang’s Memorial Car & Bike Show

Lang's Bowlarama, 225 Niantic Ave. in Cranston will host the 4th Annual Ed Lang Memorial Car & Bike Show and this year, all years, makes and models are welcome.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with trophy presentations by 2:30 p.m.

100% proceeds go to the RI Community Food Bank.

They are collecting non-perishable food items for the RI Community Food Bank. For each food item you bring, you will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Pizza Bowl (2 hours of bowling for up to 6 people, including shoe rental, 1 large pizza and a pitcher of soda.

“The Hate U Give” at William Hall Library

Living Literature will present a 50-minute, four actor, dramatic interpretation of the Read Across Rhode Island selection “The Hate you Give” by Angie Thomas. Watch this amazing YA novel come to life before your eyes! The program will take place on Sept. 24 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the William Hall Library. This performance is free and open to the public. Edgewood Garden Club bake and plant sale

The Edgewood Garden Club will hold its annual Bake & Plant Sale on Sept. 29 at the Pawtuxet Village Farmer’s Market, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The market is held behind the Shriners Imperial Room at One Rhodes Place in Edgewood. Proceeds will fund the club’s on-going civic beautification projects at Stillhouse Cove, the Village Playground, and the William Hall Library.

The club members will be selling home-baked goods, including harvest-related items, and plants, many culled from members’ gardens. These perennials are particularly suited to local growing conditions and will be hardy additions to any yard. The club is also collecting plant pots for recycling to the market’s farmers who’ll use them to start next year’s crops in late winter and early spring. Four-inch pots are preferred.

Craft Fair to benefit Veterans

Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post 2812 Auxiliary will be hosting a Craft Fair on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1418 Plainfield St. Proceeds go towards support of our veterans. If you would like to reserve a table for $20, please contact Lillian Macera at 829-6080.

Annual Cranston Firehouse Chili Cookoff

The Annual Cranston Firehouse Chili Cookoff hosted by the Lt. Jim Pagano Foundation will be held on Sept. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Blue Moon Pub, located at 42 Phenix Ave. in Cranston.

Join in at the 3rd annual Cranston Firehouse Chili Cookoff and vote for your favorite fire station chili! The event will feature music, door prizes, raffles, and good community fun, while supporting the Lt. Jim Pagano Foundation. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance at the Blue Moon Pub in Cranston, or at the door on the day of the event for $15.

Annual Friends of the Poor Walk

On Sept. 30, the 11th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk (SVDP RI) will be held in the Garden City Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take a Step to end Poverty! Join in for music, food, and family fun! Don't forget to bring food, clothing, and toiletry donations to help local friends in need. SVDP RI is a nonprofit organization that is comprised of 434 parish-based volunteers who provided nearly $2.5 million in assistance to needy Rhode Islanders since 2015.

Taste of Pawtuxet Village

Hosted by Friends of Pawtuxet Village in coordination with Pawtuxet Village Merchants, Taste of Pawtuxet Village will be held Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Imperial Room at One Rhodes Place. Did You Know?

Like every other year, the first day of fall happens on the Autumnal equinox. While it doesn't happen on the same exact date every single year, it happens around the same date each year.
