Forfeits doom West in loss to rival East

The Cranston East wrestling team continued its unbeaten season with a 54-22 victory over crosstown rival Cranston West on Thursday night in a non-league matchup.

The Falcons emerged victorious in five of the seven weight slots that they were able to fill, but seven West forfeits allowed the ’Bolts to escape with a landslide win.

Falcons’ senior Envyus Adoptante pinned East’s Nevin Som to start the meet at 106 to give West an early edge, but forfeit victories for East’s James Roderick, Elton Mentor and Emil Anico at 113, 120 and 126 turned the momentum abruptly.

The ’Bolts then furthered the gap on the scoreboard with pins from Nicholas Rutherford and Angel DeJesus at 132 and 138.

West bounced back, however, when Nelson Cooper, Noah Robert and Jadon Luceus earned decisions over East’s Joshua Guzman, Jamari Cardoso-Mason and Gemalik Ramirez at 145, 152 and 160.

But, once again, forfeits turned the tide of the meet.

East followed by securing four consecutive forfeit victories to clinch the meet, as Jeffry Guzman, Randy Duran, Brendan Lanigan and Henry Torres were all awarded victories at 170, 182, 195 and 220.

West finished the meet on a high note, with heavyweight Didier Ferland-Haroun pinning East’s James Lemos in the final match.

Both West and East will return to action on Friday and Saturday for the state tournament at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

Early bracket action will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. Those who make it through the early rounds will return to compete on Saturday. The state championship matchups are typically slated for around 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
