Edgewood church celebrates 125th anniversary

Past, present and future members of Edgewood Congregational Church are invited to attend the ECC homecoming, as the church celebrates its 125th anniversary, a milestone in the life of the church and community.

This Sunday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the church will open its doors for a special celebration that will include worship, fellowship, food and entertainment.

Bri DeRosa, a member of the planning committee for the homecoming event, said that the day is about both celebration and reflection.

“It is important to us to throw open the doors of the church to the community and invite people to recall why Edgewood Church has been so important to this neighborhood for 125 years,” she said. “It is also well timed, because as we celebrate our wonderful church community and its 125th birthday, we also need to share with everyone that this is a crucial moment in Edgewood’s history.

“This building and congregation offer so much to the neighborhood, not just in faith and fellowship but also in rental space, community outreach and vital missions, like our Lydia’s Closet thrift store. Without the support of those who have loved and benefited from ECC over the years, we may not be able to keep those things going.

“We want to revitalize for a stronger future as an integral part of this neighborhood, and we need everyone’s help to realize that vision and keep the church and its programs going for another 125 years.”

Rev. Nancy Soukop will lead the Commemorative Worship Service, honoring the history of the church, as well as energizing its future. There will be lively music offered by Brenda Muoio and the ECC Choir and a special message by Rev. Soukup. Following the service, in Sawyer Hall, there will be an opportunity to renew old connections and make new friends.

All attending will be treated to a delicious meal as well as entertainment. There will be a display of pictures and memorabilia related to the church. Attendees are invited to bring any items.

Three actors from “Company Globe,” under the direction of Christin Goff, will offer brief selections from the Bard’s plays. The company is located in Studio B in the church building.

Lydia’s Closet, their successful thrift shop, will be open for a short time, and there will be other items offered for sale.

If possible, let church office manager Pat Kohler know that you will attend or need a ride (461-4405). The Planning Committee consists of Bri DeRosa, Leslie McCrea, and Merry Scarborough.
