Excited by potential

I am thrilled to be here as Warwick’s new superintendent, and I can’t wait to meet you.

I’m a superintendent who is mobile; I treat my cell phone like it’s my desk. I learn by seeing and doing; it’s the core of who I am.

I was excited when I spent a day in the district a few weeks ago as part of the search process, visiting schools, talking to teachers, students, administrators, and staff. I was excited by the potential and intelligence that I could see. Teachers deserve a special mention, as they are the people who make it happen in our schools, and it’s my job to see, hear, and support them.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I’ve worked in education for more than 25 years now, first as a history teacher and cross-country and track coach, then as an administrator, and eventually as superintendent in North Kingstown and Cumberland. I’m married and have three children, age 16, 14, and 10, so I care about education as a parent too.  I live next door in Cranston and I am glad to be living in a community close by.

Yes, change will be needed in Warwick to improve our district. It won’t happen overnight and will require a true team approach where communication is fully two ways. My lifetime involvement in sports has made me better understand the idea of teamwork. If we don’t work together, we won’t get far.

I’ve also had the opportunity to meet with Warwick’s Mayor and it is clear the city administration and City Council must be part of the team too, and I look forward to working closely with them.

I hope you will measure me by my actions. I mean what I say and I work hard to follow through. I will help set our vision going forward – for example, to be a district that is superior in its use of technology. But all of you will be needed to bring our common goals to life.

In the next weeks and months, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. If there’s something at a school or in the community you think I should see, please invite me.  I am also open to your questions and comments.

I take extremely seriously the responsibility that comes with this superintendent’s position. When it comes to trying to make this district great, for the sake of our kids, I won’t spare any effort.
