Hawks draw Eagles in quarterfinals; Pats, Titans set for non-league action

Hendricken will be the lone Warwick team taking to the turf for playoff action this week, but Toll Gate and Pilgrim won’t be idle. The Titans and Pats will both be playing non-league games in search of picking up some momentum prior to the Thanksgiving Day rivalry showdown. Toll Gate had a chance to thrust itself into the playoff conversation two weeks ago against Hope, but it couldn’t grab the victory it needed. The Titans were then shut out by Division III power Smithfield on Friday night to bring their league record to 1-6.

Wins certainly haven’t been easy to come by for the Titans this fall, but they’ll have a chance to boost their confidence heading into Thanksgiving when they travel to Ponaganset (2-5) for a non-league matchup with the Chieftains on Friday at 11 a.m.

The Chieftains have dropped four of their last five games and Toll Gate’s offense is due to break out, scoring a touchdown or less in its last four games.

If the Titans can move the ball early and gain some confidence, they should have a good shot to get in the win column for the first time since Sept. 23.

Toll Gate 35, Ponaganset 28

Like Toll Gate, Pilgrim (1-6) has had its struggles for a majority of the season, as well.

The Pats have lost six straight games and have only scored eight points in their last three contests combined.

Pilgrim should get its offense rolling this week, though, when it hosts Coventry (1-6) at Warwick Vets on Friday night at 6 p.m.

The Oakers have struggled, particularly on defense, as of late.

They haven’t been able to keep any of their last four opponents under 28 points, while also enduring struggles on the offensive side of the ball.

The Pats should be able to put up some points on Friday after Coventry allowed Johnston to put up 42 points with a quarterback making his first start last Friday.

Pilgrim’s defense has been playing well for a majority of the season, so if the offense can get going, the Pats could potentially end the fall with two consecutive wins.

Pilgrim 45, Coventry 30

Hendricken will be the top seed out of Division I-A heading into the quarterfinals, and it will draw No. 4 Barrington (3-4) out of Division I-B at home on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Hawks locked up their perfect league record with a 27-14 win over rival La Salle last Friday, and will look to continue their dominance against the Eagles.

Hendricken heads into Friday night’s tilt a bit banged up, namely with Kwity Paye leaving the La Salle game in the second quarter and not returning.

Paye’s status is unknown at this time, but even if he is sidelined for another week, Hendricken should have no problem getting by Barrington.

The Hawks proved last week that their depth can be overwhelming for opponents, and Hendricken just simply has more talent than the visiting Eagles this week.

Hendricken’s health will be more crucial heading into next week with a potentially greater test looming. But, for now, the Hawks will have no problem advancing to the semifinals even at less than full strength.

Hendricken 56, Barrington 6
