Warwick track athlete wins NE10 Rookie of Week Award

The Stonehill College women’s track and field team saw the 4x800-meter relay team and freshman Casey Gannon of Warwick earn Northeast-10 Conference weekly honors, as announced by the Conference on Thursday, after their performances at the Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College.

The women’s 4x800-meter relay team finished first among nine teams this past weekend clocking in a time of 9:17.88. The quartet was made up of Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough), Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy), Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), and Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) earning their first NE10 Relay Team of the Week honor this season.

Knox was the lead off leg in the relay clocking in an unofficial time of 2:22, as she handed the baton off to Hannon running an unofficial time of 2:18.9. Lastra ran the third leg of the relay, where she finished in an unofficial time of 2:18.0 and handed the baton off to Caiazzi who crossed the finish line in an unofficial time of 2:18.4. The quartet finished the race about 49 seconds faster than the second place Connecticut College squad who clocked in at 10:06.27. Stonehill’s time at the Invitational is also currently around 49 seconds faster than the second place Adelphi 4x800 team on the Conference performance list.

Toll Gate graduate Gannon tallied her second NE10 Track Rookie of the Week award this week as she competed in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the Silfen Invitational. The freshman earned her first individual title this season as she took home the title in the 400-meter hurdles clocking in a personal best time of 1:03.88. She earned first by finishing three seconds faster than second-place Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) who crossed the finish line at 1:06.43.

The Warwick native also clocked in a personal best time of 15.77 in the 100-meter hurdles. She was the first freshman across the finish line in the event.

Gannon also won NE10 Rookie of the Week last week when she competed in three events at the 53rd Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia. In the 400-meter hurdles, Gannon clocked in at 1:04.71 finishing 21st out of 58 competitors qualifying her for New England’s. She also finished 39th out of 54 competitors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.62. For her third event, Gannon ran the second leg of the race in the 4x400-meter relay clocking in an unofficial split of 59.5, assisting the quartet in a sixth-place result out of eight teams.
